I just got a Medela harmony manual pump (about $90 new), I have used it once so far and it was great, at first I thought it was crap because it didn't seem to be doing anything, until I looked at the bottle and realised it was nearly full!

I had a Medela mini electric double pump, which suddenly stopped working for no apparent reason. I also found it made me feel like a cow in a milking factory and was noisy and I didn't get much control over the pumping like I do with the manual ones.

I also got a really basic old fashioned rubber hand pump for a wedding (so I could express some milk off in the bathroom before my boobs exploded - so glamorous! haha) and found it gets just as much milk as the electric one but it's a pain because I need to keep emptying the milk into the bottle.

So, so far - Medela harmony for the win! (I also hear the Avent Isis is good as some have mentioned above, and is probably very similar)

I never get much with a manual pump I have tried at least 4 brands, I don’t think there is at all a problem with your supply cause your baby’s doing what it should and gaining weight. Try massaging your breast while expressing you will find you get more quicker. I expressed sooooo much milk with it and it was great... thanks all freckle yeah i just tried it randomly like i used to with E but it makes sense to do it after a feed i guess:) how much is the isis?

kellz i had shells but they overflowed though might be ok this time.. must find them

re the 2 year old pump 'm just anal about safety and stuff so prefer a new one..

I've found the avent isis manual pump fantastic and very fast, I do alot of expressing as I've returned to work, as long as I can relax I can get 250mls in 20 mins during my lunch break.

I tried a medela electric pump but wasn't able to get any where as much milk in the same time span. when at home I express after buba feeds and get around 60-120 mls. personally I've found if I'm feeling relaxed I am able to express a greater volume of milk and much quicker if I'm feeling tense things don't go so well and it can take alot longer. I've also found that by massaging the breast tissue can help get more of the hind milk to let down.

50mls in 10 minutes is above average pumping output'; normal output varies between 10-30ml from BOTH breasts per session. I couldn't express to save my life when DS1 was a baby, with DS2 so not an issue.

We bought a Medela Swing because it as supposed to be the one of the best electric pumps out there, as I was going to be pumping at work, and I got more milk out in less time with my at the time 5 year old Avent Isis manual pump than I ever did with the Swing. We flogged the Swing on Trade me. LOL

If your leaking lots I totally recommend the advent breast milk collector shields. I was using the avent manual and liked that. I don't see why your one that is two years old would be no good though? I borrowed my friends that she got 4 years ago and I found it great - just replaced a couple of bits in it and there were spares anyway.

I used the avent isis and it was awesome! I use to express enough to feed my sisters baby as well and it was pretty quick... I had trouble expressing with Jack, I was using a Tommee Tippee. I borrowed SIL's Avent Isis the other week and it was brilliant, I got 80ml in 10min which is heaps compared to when Jack was a baby.
I would think that your supply has adjusted to what Liam needs so it may take a little while for your body to produce more milk at the time you want to express.

I think that there is debate now as to whether it matters what time of day you express

sorry i realise there is prob many topics but don't have time to search:)

I didn't have much money so bought a cheap medula manual pump.. only got 50mls in 10 mins... with Ethan I got 120 at least in the same time...though i was expressing with Ethan from day one adn only tried today with Liam.....i realise i should try in morning but don't have time a lot of mornings.. .and simply forgot this morning lol:) has my supply adjusted to what Liam needs so not as much to express?

what pumps do you recommend..i dont want to use the old one i had with Ethan.. 2 years old so obviously i need a different one....any suggestions? i dont want second hand so guess i'll have to fork out the money...:)
