Maybe it wasn't a plum tree.... that's what they told us it was but it is currently a tree with chopped off branches of varying lengths and no foliage whatsoever, it could be anything.

I know that is the problem isn't it, you want trees big enough to screen them out and you want it now, not thinking about how huge they'll be later. It doesn't help that I'm very impatient.

We've tried to stick to stuff that won't get too big, large shrubs or small trees apart from the Kowhai I planted. That was a really big plum tree!!!

I'll ask DH about it when he gets home tonight, and see if he has any ideas for replacment trees, is there houses etc quite close to where the trees need to be planted? Just if so you dont want anything that gets too big otherwise in five years you are going to have the arborist returning to take them down without removing your house!!! Hi rosie, unfortunatey we are in Wellington, not Waikato, would have been great to help out a family on here by sending some business their way.

I'd say it is probably about 700mm diameter. We don't want to plant exactly on top of it, almost on either side really. I can't understand why the previous owners butchered the tree in the first place, it can't have blocked any sun but did block the neighbours, now we can see straight into each others kitchens. My plan is to remove the remains of the plum tree and then plant three trees along the fence line to screen them out (just need to find some fast growing, hopefully evergreen trees).

Annnddd, Just thought I should warn you that those little walk behind hire ones are very very hard work to use as you have to control all its movements yourself.

Hi everyone!!1

We have a stump grinder (very big 30HP self-drive etc, the DH's go ooohh and start drooling!!!)

Where abouts in NZ are you, if your in Waikato DH can come and give you a quote. Otherwise it is $150 a hour but it gets through a massive massive stump in a hour.

We go down to approx 30cm below the soil and will get most of the main roots, the ones that are left arnt a major unless you are wanting to put in foundations etc.

You will need to (regardless of who or what stumpgrinds it) remove all the stumpgrindings and replace them with soil, (if you are wanting to replant anything there) as for some reason nothing seems to grow in the stumpgrinding mixture.

We had a big tree taken down (for $400) and then the stump removed and big roots ground out for an extra $100 (in Wellington). lol if you do it just do it in bits. Dig down and have a go with the axe, have a rest and go do something else and then go finish the stump. Have a rest and maybe the next day go attack the roots. You only really need to get rid of the really big ones if you wanna replant. Don't stump grinders just grind the stump down so that you can put dirt overtop. I didn't think they took out the massive roots etc?? We had a massive pohtukawa tree that the previous owners totally butchered and it was half dead. Diameter of the stump was pretty close to a metre.

All we did was dug down a bit, attacked it with an axe to get rid of the main stump and found the biggest roots that went out from the trunk and used a hoe to pull them up and cut them. hmm i'm not sure Dh works for the local council in the parks dept i know though di it but if have no idea how much they charge. We had a quote for 6 stumps to be ground down and the quote was $450. We got this quote done in the last 6 months. $40 would be a bargain but maybe you had smaller trees? Has anyone had a tree stump removed and if so what was the cost? It is $220 per day to hire a stump grinder and I just wanted to see how cost effective that is versus paying someone to do the whole job.
