Everything has really already been said.

Lots of snacks if he is of snacking age. Toys with flashing lights but no sound if he is very young. The noise made me feel self consicious of the other passengers. Lots of books and a portable dvd player with head phones. These may be a bit old for him if 7.5 means months old. I made sure all outfits for baby were pj type so there was no undressing etc unless necessary. Also a large glad bag with clothes, nappies, wipes in it as taking nappy bag into the loo for changes is just nasty.

Get a good nights sleep the night before and the day before if there is time. No late night packing. You will not be sleeping for the next 24 hours. If you can keep your mind good and in the game it will really help. Once I lost it the baby did. I have lived overseas for the last 9 years and have travelled with all three of my children from birth to 13 years at least 2 times per year on long haul flights. Take care and hope all goes well.

And old cloth nappies to put on the seat (esp when feeding!). And a change of top for you because you will probably get gross stuff on you as well (I took pants but didn't need them). Make sure when you are checking in or in lines at the airports that the staff can see you - they will fast track you through if you have young children. If you are returning via Heathrow remember they can be pretty ruthless even with sealed baby food. They made us open 1 of the sealed pottles we had which meant 1 less snack for Lil, grrr. BUT on board service is generally awesome and they are really helpful. I had an icecream container with small toys, a hand puppet and a few books. At 12 mths tho Lil was quite happy to watch Playhouse Disney an dplay on the floor - try and get a window seat row, if the plane isnt full they will give you one and then your little one can play on the floor.
Good luck for the trip, and so sorry about your family member.

I would also take a couple pegs to attach it above the bassinet.
Hope that makes sense

Will you be travelling alone or with DH/DP?

We flew to Ireland when my DDs were 11 months. I dressed them in stretch n grows for the entire trip.

I would pack as little toys as possible as DS will most likely be fascinated with the surroundings.

Also I would take a muslin to cover DS when he is sleeping. Help keep out the distractions.
Be sure to request a bassinet for your flights. Preference is given to younger babies however.
Also if you do have a baby carrier of sorts I would take it as getting around airports is hard work! We had a stroller that we could collect after each flight. It depends on the airport whether it'll be the gate or the baggage claim.

From what I've seen, airline staff are VERY clucky! They were great with the girls. Also other passengers were very tolerant and one couple took the girls off our hands so we could eat our meals.

Edited by tishy

But in your case I'd see what family/friends back in Wales can rustle up for you in the way of cot, highchair, carseat, maybe even a pram (although C loved having his own pram in NZ and he would nap in it if needed).

Formula in a dispenser to make it easier. A couple of jars of food and lots of spoons. Any favourite snacks (eg at 10m we took rice cakes and toddler cereal puffs)
Nappies and wipes - I took 1 nappy per 2hrs of the flight (didn't get through them all but better to have too many than not enough!)
Bum cream if you use it
Small bottle of hand sanitiser
Pamol and syringe (just in case!)
Teething poweder (also just in case)
Change of clothes for arrival

Baby carrier/sling is a lifesaver in the airport if you've got one. And a lightweight stroller will be easier if you have that option.

Big suitcase - if you're staying with family you'll be able to do washing fairly easily so don't go overboard with clothes ;)
PJs
woolly singlets
socks
extra sleeping bag
muslins
blanket, bedding from home
extra cuddly!
long pants
long sleeved onsies
tshirts
jumper
warm hat
sun hat
bowls, bottles, sippy cup, spoons
any favourite food
a few toys but not too many!
we took one tin of formula and one pack of nappies and planned to buy what we needed once we arrived.

HTH
