We are in the same boat as a few of you with a wee boy who has severe asthma. We all get the flu vacc each year to provide a 'surrounding' immunity (hopefully) for him.

I just got everyones first shot last week and we all coped really well. Even the baby whose only 8 mths old showed no signs of distress or illness afterwards. My 7 year old said her arm was a little sore but we haven't had any flu like symptoms at all.

We are all getting it because the kids have asthma probs and every time they get sick they end up in the ED with respiratory issues. So it's really not much of a question for us, particularly as they go to daycare so get exposed to a lot.

Bobbie she just brought up the subject cause she is going to be getting it this year as she visits so many different families.

I've never had a flu jab and I've had the flu 3 times, including a case of H1N1 last year (well pretty sure it was but they stopped testing so who really knows) in nearly *ahem* 35 years. I've never been in an 'at risk' category so never considered getting one........neither has DP and neither have the 2 boys who are 6.5 and 2.5

My mum gets a flu shot every year because she is prone to getting bronchitis in the winter...she still seems to get pretty sick though so not sure how 'effective' or otherwise it actually is in her case. I asked the same thing today.

My Dr's only give it if your child was sickly the previous winter or has cardiac issues or something like that.

So Cooper didn't get it done & thank god for that cause my bloody arm hurts!!! But in all seriousness - I would do some reading online and also speak to your GP. See if he falls into a high risk group. Make a call based on what you've read and been told and what your own feelings are.

There is some good stuff online.So long as you check your sources are reliable you should get a good idea about what's best for you both.

Is it really worth getting DS the flu jab this year?

I have never got it for myself as I never get the flu (touchwood) but PAFT brought up the subject today about getting DS jabbed.

I am in two minds about it as I know some people get really sick after getting it but then I don't want him to get the flu (swine flu) this winter.
