DD has just turned one and she's in a big bed in her room - she never took to the cot so we've finally stopped pushing the issue. She doesn't roll too much and knows how to get up and down off of it so we feel confident she's safe in it.

Next baby we won't be using a cot I don't think. Just moving straight into a bed, probably co-sleeping.

Thanks for the input ladies DH and I are very much making up stuff as we go along so it's great to hear that worked for others. My Aunty went straight from a bassinette to a bed with her kids, she used a safety sleep with the bed so that they were safe and it worked well for her.

I had never really thought about doing that until recently and am now wishing that we had skipped the cot cause as you say it is an expense that doesn't need to be. I think that will work great, if you don't feel the need to keep your baby confined to a cot.

We ended up co-sleeping, and once DD became too mobile we put our mattrass on the floor, so she can get on and off whenever she likes. When we moved house 2 months ago, I didn't bother putting up the cot, as it had been gathering dust in the old house for months.

I'm considering moving her into a double bed in her own room, once we are ready to move her out of our bed.

Be prepared to encounter a lot of people, who will tell you it won't work, or that you are nuts. Has anyone used a hammock for the first few months and transitioned their baby straight to a bed. I can't be bothered with a cot, it seems like such a waste of money.

I'd like to crate a completely baby friendly / safe room with a futon mattress on the floor to transition the baby into when he outgrows the hammock. Then when he gets a bit bigger we'll move the mattress onto a proper base.

I have heard the arguments against doing it this way (baby can get out of bed whenever etc.) but I really find myself drawn to the Montessori way of thinking and would love to hear from anyone else who's done something similar
