Reuben is a big boy for his age but is in proportion and his plunket nurse isn't worried about it but I do get annoyed at peoples' comments. The other day we were at the doctors and another lady in the waiting room commented "We don't have to report you to the SPCA do we!" I know she meant well but it was kind of rude

As for swimming - we go every now and again just for fun, R loves it and we don't go frequently.

I took Chloe to lessons in a chlorinated pool from age 9-18 months, and we now go about once a month to Lloyd Elsmore in Pakuranga. I had childhood asthma and both MIL and SIL have asthma too, but thankfully Chloe hasn't showed any symptoms. From what I have read it is to do with the atmosphere in chlorinated pools, but that if you aren't taking them lots it shouldn't be problem. It shows up more in pool workers and competitive swimmers. The classes are usually only 1/2 hr.
I guess it's just something you are going to have to weigh up. If there is a non-chlorine pool you can get to that would obviously be great, otherwise maybe just take her every now and then so she gets some exposure to a pool - Alex LOVES it

She does have a habit of trying to change the channel to 666 though, it's quite amusing.

Kiwinz4 - The couple of snotty noses that we've had have seemed to have lasted for at least 5 days or so, but then cleared up on their on. Perhaps if he's still sick after the weekend you should take him to the doctor?

Minki - yes if you could let me know the details I'll try to make it thanks =)

WJ - good on you for having the patience to cuddle him to sleep, I just put Violet in her cot and walk away.. usually she falls asleep after 10 minutes or so. Actually I don't think she would let me cuddle her anyway, she hardly ever lets me cuddle her when she's awake, much preferring to push me away instead! Oh well, hopefully when she's a bit older she'll become a bit more snugly.

Hope everyone is enjoying their long weekend =)
Reuben will take any opportunity when his clothes are off to try pulling his nappy off - can undo the velco tabs on both the cloth and disposable nappies and I think the safe-t-sleep is velcro too?

We also have our very first really snotty nose here - have been good so far with no real sickness apart from eczema. Any ideas on how to clear it up? He doesn't seem to be worried or overly sick, just a continuously running nose for over a week now which I also don't think is helping with the sleeping issue.

As for toys, we are currently into anything with wheels - any type of car, things with spinning balls in them and an RC fire engine are a big hit at the mo because Reuben can chase after it now

For that reason I still have to cuddle him till he's sleepy then put him in bed and he rolls over and goes to sleep, because if he's in a silly mood he will just stand up or play. Unfortunately he figured out how to undo the safe t sleep long ago.

He is walking everywhere now which is so cute, it has slowed him down for the moment as he doesn't walk as fast as he crawls lol but that will come. He is super clingy at the moment too, only wants me and wants to be held all the time. Separation anxiety I guess?

1 month till his birthday Im excited. Im happy to start the second year while I have loved seeing him grow this first year its been a really tough year in some ways so I am looking forward to a happier more enjoyable time.

Minki Noah plays with things like his ride on fire engine, walker, blocks, things he can put in and out of containers, I got him this jigsaw type foam number mat he loves pulling the pieces apart lol activity table but he also loves playing with pots and wooden spoons and bowls from the cupboard or ripping paper hehe anything goes.

Good to see some people are around.
Niquey we are thinking of having a birthday get together mid-december for the babies, are u interested in coming? I can pm u the details.

Sleep is going ok here, though if I leave Cameron awake in his cot long enough I'll go in to find him trying to break free of his safety sleep. He's crawling, pulling up and cruising at the moment and it seems to tire him out fine so he sleeps well, yay! After all that stuff I went thru at the beginning trying to get him to even sleep at all, getting so tired and delirious verging on insanity LOL! And now he is the perfect sleeper. The second baby really is easier to teach how to sleep.

He had terrible eczema too, on his face, head and hands, for months and months and I tried all sorts of creams, oils and ointments. My doctor insisted I stop using anything and just let it clear up on its own, as the stuff in those oils and creams just aggravate it. I was very, very skeptical. Anyway last time I went he just told me I had to stop using stuff and it would go away, I finally gave in and did just that. So that was 2 weeks ago and its completely cleared up, even what I thought was "teething cheeks" isn't really at all, his cheeks are fine and he's cutting 4 teeth all at once! So for those who are experiencing the same thing, maybe something to try. I wondered if it was a food he was eating, which may have aggravated it too if he already had it, but he's eating way more variety of food now than he ever was and it's still gone away completely.

Its's funny though, the doctor did prescribe some cream for some crusty rash he had on his hands which wouldn't clear up even though I wasn't putting anything on them (coz anything on his hands goes straight in his mouth). I put the cream on at night and put a sock on his hands so he wouldn't put it in his mouth. The eczema cleared up thankfully, but I've also had a horrible rash where I wore my wedding ring, which I ended up having to take off as it was too excrutiatingly sore to wear.. anyway that's cleared up too! Can't remember what its called right now.

What kind of toys are your bubbas enjoying playing with now?

Edited by Minkiwings

I've been teaching Violet how to sit back down by herself which seems to be helping (she used to just let go and topple backwards!) but now she bends her knees and goes down slowly, so we've had a lot less head incidents which has been good.

We've been struggling with early waking recently.. she loves to wake up at the crack of dawn. It's getting very tiresome. I've tried lots of different things but nothing is working as yet. She always seems desperate for a milk feed so I'm not sure there's much I can do about it. I think the safe-t-sleep wraps around the entire mattress and you velcro them into it, meaning they can't move at all from their back. You could always start him off tucked in at the bottom of the cot, if you find he always crawls down..?

The cot rail covers arrived today and look great so hopefully they'll do the trick! Although knowing my luck she'll probably decide the chew the ends of the cot instead now..

Daisyboo - Violet has been sleeping on her tummy ever since she learnt to roll over, I always put her on her back but she obviously prefers to sleep the other way. It used to freak me out a bit too!

Got a phone call from Auckland hospital on thursday night last week saying get your sister out from Perth, ya mums really sick and you need to come up tomorrow. So we packed up thursday night and headed to Auckland early friday morning to the hospital and luckily my sister made it out saturday morning and Mum passed away sunday afternoon. All i can say is i would never wish lung cancer on my worst enemy. My sister, one of my brothers and I (my other brother was a bit too emotional and left saturday night back to Hamilton thinking she was ok) was there when she died.
So a quiet weekend for my birthday on sat hehe. Poor Seth is up the wall on his sleep and eating. any kind of routine is gone! argh! and hes sick. Dr did the whole 'oh yea parinoid mother thing' lol ugh
He managed to pull himself along the wooden floors while we were with mum in her room waiting for the funeral director lol.
otherwise no crawling. hes quite happy sitting and bending in half! looks painful.
and i have irritated the end of my c sect scar. gosh its painful! hurts to move. oh wells ill be able to rest for a few days at least

Lili also likes the sound of her own screams for fun....just about drove off teh bridge the other day when I thought she was asleep in the back and then all of a sudden a high pitched scream followed by giggles - got such a fright. I also bought some birthday toys in the farmers sale to put aside - some for birthday and some for xmas, some really good toy sales at the moment.
CL thanks for the house selling dust - although I have to be honest and say i find the comment about giving up breastfeeding to get drunk very disturbing, my own personal opinion though, and forgive me if I missed a joke there as I haven't read back very far.
Weehee - accountants ARE massively expensive! I agree and so wished I had lists of jobs with the pay per hour rate when I was making career choices.....then again we wouldn't have any teachers, nurses or prison guards if they gave out lists like that ay
well my little sweetpea is waking up so I need to head off - sending good weather vibes to those of you who have littlies home for school holidays (and home in general) :)

    Author: weeheebaby
Subject: 32638
Posted: 21 July 2011 at 4:29pm

Hey WJ - don't worry too much about the limited diet, so much easier to plan is what I say. Nathan has a really boring diet, mostly due to my CBA syndrome.(hopefully you can work out what CBA is!) He's got his whole life to get used to other exciting things to eat. Mostly just pears, rice, pumpkin and apples here. The odd bit of "excitement" from whatever comes out of a Watties tin. Daniel had the same when he was little and he loves all sorts of things now, including cauliflower and brocoli (they get scoffed first at tea time).

As for up and down days - I have lots of them too. I think my whole emotional state is such a roller coaster ride that my poor DH must try to have to guess where I'm at each day when he gets home. But I figure it's just a stage and that having little ones at home can do all sorts of weird and wonderful things to your mind. Some days are friggen hard (and I sit on my butt parked in front of the computer those days) and other days are great. At the end of the day though I know that both boys are well loved and pretty much well cared for so that makes me happy.

In other news, I think I'm going to be an accountant when I grow up. They seem to able to charge absolute extortionate amounts of money for next to no work. We just got a bill for over 2 grand for what I know was only 4 or 5 hours worth of work. Buggars! I'm gonna make DH ring up and seriously question their billing. It's ridiculous.

    Author: snugglebug
Subject: 32638
Posted: 21 July 2011 at 11:14am

Music_mummy and minkiwingsI know what you mean, having bad days here at the moment as N has decided screaming is the fun thing to do, all the time, not cos he's unhappy just he likes the sound? I don't know? But it's got me at my wits end, he does it at home and out. But then he will crawl up to me and climb all over me and give me kisses and cuddles or do something so cute and I'll think oh my god I love you so much. So there are very trying times and awesome times. Being a mother is so hard sometimes!

Ecomummy that must really suck. I hope your house sells soon. Is dropping the price a little an option? I hope you get some good luck soon. I find being a stay at home Mum hard enough with the small amount of part time work I do, so I admire you.

On the brighter side though N's appetite has gone up hugely and he's eating a lot more solids (he was very picky before) and in turn that seems to have him sleeping through most nights which I have not had in months maybe since he was 4 months old so I am very happy for a reprieve from waking up 2 or 3 times however long that may last. He is sleeping a lot better in general because he's more tired from all his standing and crawling and moving about. And I have found these things have naturally happened despite all the efforts Ive made with verbal reassurance, self settling etc I have found that his sleeping has improved naturally with time and persistence with routine, etc so I hope that comforts some of you who want their babies to sleep through- I tried everything under the sun but in the end it seems he'll just do it when he wants to. Sleep training was a fail for us.

Had paediatrician on Monday and discussed some concerns with paed as Noah's reflux has been back with a vengance since I weaned him off losec and also with some foods he was puking the whole dinner back up especially if it had meat or pasta. The paed advised me that with his problem he's not able to tolerate chunks in food at this point so I need to keep all his foods really smooth. That makes sense as usually when he pukes its lumpier food. So I am going back to basics for a while, simple purees and he seems happier. Still not allowed to give dairy until a week after he turns 1 at least, when he will have more allergy tests. His tummy is still really tender when pressed on and he's very refluxy so we have put him back on losec and keeping an eye on him after everything he eats. He's such a sensitive boy lol. What I can give him for food is really limited without dairy and big pieces.

Well Lil's operation was very successful. We go back on Friday to get the stitches out, she looks a bit odd at the moment with blue stitches from the inside of her nose down to her lip and into her mouth. She is a bit sad at the moment but we are managing the pain with some medicinal help and lots of cuddles. She has arm splints which are fabric and velcro with boning inside to keep her arms straight so she can't put anything in her mouth. I reckon its these combined with no dummy and no front on cuddles that are making her the most sad.
She is eating and drinking well - and is still sleeping through the night which is a god send. We have 7 teeth at the moment with number 8 coming through now (good timing not!) its kind of hard when you cant chew anything to manage the teething situation but distracting her with weebles seems to be working ok - man weebles are awesome!!!
sorry for the all about us post - just an update for those of you who knew the op was coming up.

He's got a couple of teeth coming up so I thought "I'll feed him and he'll go back to sleep with the comfort of sucking".....nope! After some Pamol too and about 1/2 hour of crying (with us checking in on him every 10min) I went to give him more feed. At the end he was just nibbling so I pulled him off and he grinned at me!!! I then put him over my shoulder for a burp and he leans in and squishes his nose to mine with another HUGE grin. Cheeky Monkey!! He then had the nerve to laugh as I left the room. Gosh he knows how to play his mum.

I don't have a huge amount to report either, other than Kenzie now has a couple of teeth and she bit me for the first time tonight. Yah ... NOT!!

Ideas for finger food:
Vege croquets (or mix with a bit of meat)
Bananas, pears, melons, peaches - soft fruit that they can sort os squish off
Toast/crumpets/English muffins soldiers - marmite and cheese, vege mash, avocado
Cheese
Meat loaf cut into finger shapes once cooked.
Fish fingers
Mini quiches
French toast
Pancakes
Fritters - you can put nearly anything into a fritter!

The possibilities are endless really. I've just been looking through the Edmonds cookbook, the Alison and Simon Holst cookbook and the Annabell Karmel cookbook for inspiration. We're also doing Baby Led Weaning but I do give Kenzie mash but I let her feed herself by passing the spoon to her. I also think cous cous is great for making meals more filling and Kenzie also loves yoghurt - especially with banana!!

A quick search just flicked up this from the secondary collective:

up to a further 12 months’ maternity leave (bringing the total entitlement
to a maximum of 24 months’ continuous leave including leave taken prior
to the birth of the teacher’s child) subject to notifying their employer in
writing of their intention to take this leave within 9 months from the date of
commencing maternity leave under 6.3.2(a)(i);

so if you wanted to do the extra 12 months leave I can see that you would have to say so soon. You could talk to them about your intentions, put in writing that you want the leave to extend and then use this bit:

If a relieving teacher is employed it
will be a condition of the relieving appointment that it will be terminated by the employer
concerned within one month from the date that the permanent incumbent gives notice of
intention to return to work early. A teacher must give her employer at least one month’s
notice if it is her intention to return to work before maternity leave expires

to start back whenever you wanted? (it would be the legal loophole, meaning you woukdn't have to decide just now)
Dunno, i'd be having an "informal" chat with the principal soon. Do you get on?

Just plodding along here, good and bad days, ups and downs, cest la vie.

I thought he was past it as the last few days his poos seemed more or less back to normal but today not so much, so I will keep an eye on it. Have been giving him really bland food as it seems to happen more after something with meat in it. I did notice that the problem coincided with me introducing toast and giving him something that had spaghetti in it and that in the last few days he was ok when coincidentally I hadn't given him bread, but then today I didn't give him bread and it happens so who knows. We need to go back to the paediatrician soon so I'll ask him about the possibility of another intolerance but yeah hoping its not.

Maaaan I thought Noah was hard work before, now he's pulling to stand I have to never leave his side as he topples over a lot, lol he is absolutely fearless too. In just 2 days he's gotten so good at it lol. I love seeing my baby do all these things but at the same time it's exhausting! And I'm sure it's just beginning. We went to wriggle and rhyme today which was nice but he wanted to talk to all the other babies and was trying to pull the hair of the lady in front of us, lol. I think Im gona be the one with the hard work toddler running all over the place snd getting into everything

Other than that we are just plodding along, days go by really fast, busy between caring for Noah and working housework etc etc. Enjoying it all but so tired too.

Life got a lot worse this morning when she woke at 3am, very unusual. Then she didn't want to feed well so not sure why she woke, I put her into bed with me so she could help herself which she didn't really do and I felt her go relax. I thought oh good she is asleep but couldn't hear her noisy breathing. Put my hand on her chest to no rise and fall and no heart beat. I shook her and no response so screamed and flicked light on. She then startled and cried. I thought her last antics scared me but this topped that, I keep thinking what if she hadn't been in my bed??!!

I find if I mash it and mix it with a bit of his milk it is well received.

Noah is being a bit confusing at the moment. Sorry if TMI but he has had rather gross bowel movements many times a day for the last 2 weeks or so. Thought it was to do with the teething, as he has been getting a tooth, but the tooth is nearly up now he's also been out of sorts and had a big spew last week after his dinner one night- not your usual spill but a complete stomach empty. Took him to the doctor on the weekend who said the teething poo should probably not go on that long, if it is that at all, so we have to do samples over 3 days to send to the lab for testing. Its a bit baffling. Can be like 6 nappies a day, and it's waking him in the night. Hope he's ok. I have introduced toast recently and he did the big spew after something with spaghetti so I am starting to wonder if he's intolerant to something like wheat or gluten as well as dairy. Not sure. Could be a long road figuring out what it is if it's not a bug or teething.

It's official, he can pull himself up to stand. He got into my magazine rack last night and ripped up some of my magazines, cheeky little boy. Loving him so much right now, he's having a super clingy stage where he just wants me but he is also snuggling in and giving me cuddles himself and he crawls up to me and climbs on me to cuddle, and he tries to kiss my cheek but it's just a big slobbery drool mess lol. I love him so much, hehe he's so fun

(tho when her teeth are bothering her she loves chewing on it with the cool water inside- so double whammy purpose!) my friends boy has one, he has 4 teeth and he hasnt even marked it with his teeth either so definitely hardy material! Maddy is getting really good and trying to hold hers too. and it was about $12 from memory so pretty cheap for a good cup!
worth a try perhaps anyways

    Author: snugglebug
Subject: 32638
Posted: 30 June 2011 at 2:33pm

Yay Violet for rolling. She'll be off now! lol Yeah I fully agree about the people getting competitive about their babies and when they do stuff. Noah has done things early but I just credit that to him being him rather than anything I did lol, and it's been hard work running about after him! lol I think a lot of it has to do with genes/temperament- Noah is very determined and he gets frustrated when he can't do something so he works on it relentlessly until he gets it, lol and he never stops moving even when he was a newborn he wriggled constantly, apparently I was like him as a baby (determined rather than wriggly lol) and Im still like that as an adult. So maybe more chilled out babies take it more at a steady pace, who knows hehe. They all get there in the end and enjoy the time when you can leave them in one spot while it lasts as once they start moving you have to have eyes in the front, back and sides of your head and constantly move things when you think you already babyproofed everything you could, lol.

Just wanted to share a couple of things. 1, I bought these simply organic apple rice cakes from the supermarket they say 9 months plus but they are big enough that as long as you sit with baby the whole time and take it when it gets too small, they are no problem. Noah really loves them and his rice rusks also. He also loves sucking on a wedge of apple or toast. He so loves feeding himself.

2. With sippy cups, I spent heaps of money on the flashest non spill sippy cups but found Noah had a hard time using them as they were big and bulky and hard to suck. My Mum got a very basic $3 plastic one from the supermarket (sistema I think) just your typical sippy cup with the 3 holes, and nice thin handles, and Noah finds it so much easier, can hold it easily, and has cottoned on to the whole concept and drinks all his water now. I found the non spill ones were too hard to suck from. So I am only using the $3 ones now! lol they are just the blue ones you get from the baby range sistema makes, they do all the plastic containers with the blue clips. So if you haven't got a sippy cup yet don't be taken in by all the fancy ones (unless you like them/they work for you of course).

Author: Minkiwings
Subject: 32638
Posted: 27 June 2011 at 9:55pm

Ugh allergies!
Ever since starting solids Cameron has had a red rash on his cheeks. At first I thought it was teething rash, but now its spread all over his face and there's patches on his hands. So yes come to the conclusion that the huggies wipes I'm using is irritating the rash, but where the F is it coming from! Definately a food. I'm totally cool with it, I'm not going to give him drugs or creams to get rid of it, its his bodies way of dealing with it and if it gets too bad we can just steer clear of it.
Anyway so I'm thinking of what he's eaten that he might be reacting to. I'm thinking carrot or pumpkin. Think there was only one or two days that I haven't given him either or, and there's been only one or two days where the rash has completely gone. Can't remember if it happened simultaneously. So anyone have any idea about what could be causing a reaction? I'm not using anything new on his skin (he doesn't have it anywhere else), no washing powders or body wash that's different. My doctor said putting aqueous cream on it will aggrivate it and I have found this also. But its come from somewhere.

Anyways, tonight I've put the safety sleep on his bed, since every night he's woken us up by rolling over and shuffling up one end of his cot and getting stuck! He also spends about 2 hours per night just lying in his cot chatting to himself! What a weird child.

I'm also really happy with how chilled out (ish) he is. Miss 2 was already crawling and off, she was so active and a real handful. Cameron prefers to lie on the ground playing with something, studying it. He's really social too, gosh the giggles and chats! It's so nice to have a completely different baby.

Anyway I've been reading up on everyone's stuff every now and again. Just thought I'd say hello.

Oh and Craftlovers, hugs, our thoughts are with you. Hang in there! I hope Holle gets better soon. xxx

Funny how the first time she officially rolls over she does it in secret! No rolling all today then after her bath tonight she finally cracked it, in both directions, we were very proud :)) Will have to see how she goes tonight, hopefully she'll stay put and sleep.

Daisyboo that sounds cute! You should dress her in a superman outfit and take a picture, hehe.

She basically just uses pure ab muscles to help her turn! haha.. she can turn to the right now but not the left and not from front to back. She tries to move forward but instead of using her arms, the arms always go back like she wants to fly forward?? I don't understand that.
