LOL I got pregnant with my daughter 14months after I had mine inserted. Have an awesome scan pic with Bubs & IUD together Was soooooooo not impressed as I then ended up being 6 months preggy for my wedding! grrrrr...

But in saying that, it is supposed to be rare what happened to me. Like 1% I think? Babe - what kind of cervix issues? I've had cone biopsies and LLETZ treatment on mine, and there wasn't an issue with it, except it wouldn't dilate properly to get it inserted so it hurt a wee bit more than normal (which they couldn't figure out as I dilated fine during labour!!). They recommended a Mirena to me because I shouldn't have a normal IUD due to endo.

My Mirena fell out too, I'd had it for 2.5 years though. I was pretty pissed off as well.

Thanks ladies. This is pretty much the only option for contraception now since the minipill didnt work last time.

I'd just like to throw in a bit of a warning here... a lady I worked with had an IUD for years, then she got pregnant.... WITH IT IN!!! im getting my mirena put in on monday during surgery. god they come in a HUGE box. its 35cm long, 10cm wide and 2cm thick... given how small the physical mirena is it seems overkill.

but when i was going to be getting it in as normal they told me to take 2 panadol or codalgin/panadine, and 2 neurofen (they are diff active ingrdients so are allowed to take both at once) an hour before, and its the same procedure as a smear only more pinchy.

I got my IUD put in when DD was 5months - still hadn't had AF back by that point. Finally got it back at 8months and then got AF every 8-10 days for 4 months but I think that was more to do with BFing than the IUD, as I haven't had AF at all since DD stopped BFing 3weeks ago (at 13months) and am on CD 39 now (used to have upto 45day cycles before getting pregnant). But yes the last two AFs were REALLY heavy for the first couple of days - no pain at all though

I have a mirena in. Have no idea what it was like going in sorry as I had it put in under a general with other surgery.

Everyone is different with AF, I didn't get her back for 3 months and then she was back for a while. Has been almost a year since I have had it in and I seen to get AF every 3 monts for a few weeks at a time.

ok thanks so much ladies. The pain/ uncomfartableness doesn't worry me too much. It was more that i had no idea what would be happening. Probably should have talked to the nurse about it at my pre appointment but i had so many other questions.

Kiwikid - Thanks for the warning. Luckily have a few maternity pads left lol just in case. Can you remember if you next period came at the expected time? or did it mess with your cycle a bit?

emiloly - man i wish i didn't have af back. I seem to get it back 6weeks after baby . I third what the others have said, its like an invasive smear test - you need to breath deep and keep as calm as possible so you dont tense up 'down there' which I imagine would make the proceedure more difficult but if you can just breath slow and deep and hold the nurses hand it doesnt actually hurt or anything like that, just that uncomfortableness with the speculum thingy.

I took panadol beforehand and was a bit crampy the rest of the day but otherwise fine.

TMI warning - You will probably bleed quite heavily at your next period so be prepared, my bleeding was WAY heavier than normal, like flooding a Super Super tampon in an hour! For the first 3 or 4 mths I found the first couple of days of my period was very very heavy (super tampon plus pad) but by about cycle 5 they had calmed down a bit, still heavier than normal but more manageable. That's if you are getting the IUD (copper coil). I had mine fitted at FPA. I took some panadol about half an hour before I went. Like CaraMel said it's a bit like a smear only slightly more invasive. Sharp crampy type feeling but not for too long and not unbearable. I had a nurse to hold my hand and 'distract' me too which was nice.

I didn't feel dizzy at all afterwards and only had a day of very light bleeding. I had a Mirena which is an IUS rather than an IUD, but I'm pretty sure the insertion would be similar if not the same sort of scenario.

The whole procedure took less than 10 minutes. I had the Dr and a nurse in with me and the nurse was there with the sole purpose of holding my hand and talking me through it.
It was like a slightly more invasive smear test, just the speculum and lamp then the Dr inserted the IUS which was a bit pinchy but nowhere near as painful as I'd anticipated. There was a bit of rummaging around while she got it into position and then got the strings into position. Then it was all done.
They let me lie there for a few minutes as apparently some women feel a little faint afterwards. Gave me a pad as you can bleed a little after and that was that.
I had a few contraction-y type cramps in the day afterwards, but nothing worse than period pain and bled on and off for a few weeks. It was light bleeding though.

Next tuesday i am getting an IUD put in. Hopefully this works better than the mini pill. Kiara is what happened when i was on that.

Anyway.... I am extremely anxious person and i like to run things through in my head. Kind of hard when i have no idea what will happen. I was wondering if someone could run me through what is likely to happen on the day. Sounds weird but if i have more of an idea of what will happen i can at least worry a little less.
