I.e they take your last 4 weeks pay, multiply that to give them an annual figure, then add the redundancy payment on top.

Not sure how this will translate but here is the relevant table from the web page:

When the combined total of the lump sum payment and the grossed-up annual value of the employee's income for the previous four weeks* is ... then PAYE applies to the whole lump sum at a flat rate of ...
$14,000 or less 14.5 cents in the dollar.
from $14,001 to $48,000 23 cents in the dollar.
from $48,001 to $70,000 35 cents in the dollar.
greater than $70,000, but less than the ACC earners' levy maximum threshold of $110,018 (for the 2011 tax year) 40 cents in the dollar.
They can either do it that way and you get some tax back later or they can work how many weeks the redundancy equates to and override the tax to calculate it correctly for that longer period. You're lucky you get a redundancy payout in your contract, I haven't seen many contracts that allow for that nowadays!

Good luck for tomorrow.

Then when you do your tax return at the end of the year you would get it back (assuming your earnings don't take you into the next band).

It explains all the tax bands to youhere

And don't forget to apply for the rebate as well, 6 cents in every dollar is something!

ETA: Just to fix up the weird order of my link

Edited by summerlamb

So you would take whatever your redundancy payment is and multiply it by 0.06. So if you got $5000 redundancy it would be 0.06 x 5000 = $300. You would get a rebate from IRD of $300.

The forms to apply for the rebate are on the IRD website.

Sorry to hear about this and fingers x that your job is safe!
