With DS, my midwife warned me that the cord stump would smell like rotting meat -- apparently the smell is normal.

His did smell like that, but was fine with no infection and dropped off about day 6. We did't really wash around the cord much either - my midwife said that the most important thing was to keep it dry.

ask her to take a swab and test for infection.

DS2 had a yucky smelly umbilical cord/belly button. tested no infection, just kept it clean etc.
but caleb had staph infection in his and got seriously ill for a while.
to look at them/smell them there was no difference initially - until the staph infection really got a hold and it was red all around and the surrounding tissue got infected.
don't wait till that happens. just get the midwife to test. ours was reluctant to and thats why it got that bad.
be pushy.

No, I dont think that sounds normal.

We used Wecesin powder on Isabella's umbilical cord. Caleb's dropped off at 6 days, I didn't notice a smell but then I was terrified of going anywhere near it in case I hurt him TBH I never washed around the cord, I guess it just soaked in the bath well enough.

There was a tiny bit of blood the next day, but it healed up quite quickly really. Lily's had a bit of discharge, even after it fell out just before 2 weeks (tbh it fell out and we still haven't found it!)

It doesn't look good, but then again it's dying so it wouldn't look pretty! That's also why it stinks a bit.

She has an outie and that's what caused the discharge for us as it's an umbilical hernia!

If you are worried though there is absolutely no harm in asking the mw! Get MW to check DD's took over 2 months heal properly in the end we had to use alcohol to dry it out as hers is a real inny and she ended up on ABs as it was slightly infected. I took her to the Dr several times before they eventually took a swab to check for infection. Sometimes there can be a bit of yellowish discharge which is what DS had and it wasnt infected. If it is infected the skin around the cord will be red and hot.

I found the cord smelt until it dropped off, was pretty bad! Clean it with warm water with a bit of salt dissolved in it using a cotton bud or cotton wool ball, and leave it open to air as much as possible- hard in the cold weather, but thats the best thing to help dry it up. They never look nice, but shouldnt be pussy- clean it like I said a couple of times a day. If its red around it or hot to touch then its probably infected.
