We did't really wash around the cord much either - my midwife said that the most important thing was to keep it dry.<br /><br />Didn't ooze though, would get that checked.]]>

    <![CDATA[<strong>Author:</strong> <a href="https://www.ohbaby.co.nz/forum/member_profile.asp?PF=22460">5th...and final??</a><br /><strong>Subject:</strong> 33332<br /><strong>Posted:</strong> 12 May 2010 at 3:46pm<br /><br />ask her to take a swab and test for infection.<br /><br />DS2 had a yucky smelly umbilical cord/belly button. tested no infection, just kept it clean etc.<br />but caleb had staph infection in his and got seriously ill for a while. <br />to look at them/smell them there was no difference initially - until the staph infection really got a hold and it was red all around and the surrounding tissue got infected.<br />don't wait till that happens. just get the midwife to test. ours was reluctant to and thats why it got that bad.<br />be pushy.<br />]]>

If there's a lot of discharge and a smell I'd give your MW a ring and ask her to come take a look, he might need some AB's and/or a good wash a few times a day.]]>

That's also why it stinks a bit. <br /><br />She has an outie and that's what caused the discharge for us as it's an umbilical hernia! <br /><br />If you are worried though there is absolutely no harm in asking the mw! They understand with us 1st timers!! ]]>

I took her to the Dr several times before they eventually took a swab to check for infection. I kept is super clean so they kept saying it was fine.]]>

If it is infected the skin around the cord will be red and hot.<br /><br />I found the cord smelt until it dropped off, was pretty bad! It then took a few weeks for the wound to completely heal over.]]>

They never look nice, but shouldnt be pussy- clean it like I said a couple of times a day. If its red around it or hot to touch then its probably infected. Definatly get mw to check it tomorrow.]]>
