we didn't even hear from plunket until ds was 8 week olds to make an appointment for when he was 9 weeks old, they even asked did we want a visit as if it was something we wouldn't be interested in. DS was 5 weeks early only 5lbs and had a hematoma on each lung so ended up in neonates for 17days so um yes I would like a visit as we need to make sure he is gaining weight etc. My mw before she discharges me said we should be seeing weekly for the first few weeks just so they can make sure he is gaining ok oh and she dropped the paper work off on her way cause we live quite close to the plunket rooms. She came and then said she would come again in 3 weeks. Oh yeah, some of the Plunket people need a right good kicking ...

We finally met our nurse on Izzy's fourth visit. We're on the North Shore and our nurse had been helping out in Waitakere before that and we'd had a different reliever each time, so no continuity at all. I don't really understand why they didn't just send the relievers to Waitakere and leave our nurse here? What is the point of disrupting two different areas? The nurse is great by the way, not complaining about her, just don't understand the organisation.

Don't get me started on the Karitane nurse though. She didn't even speak English properly for one thing, and all she did was read handouts aloud rather than saying anything useful. Then, we all turned up for our seven-month group ... but there was no nurse. So we left. We'd been let into the clinic by someone from the play group who then left the clinic, so I thought I better ring the Plunket Area Office to let them know that the clinic was unlocked. I told them what had happened, about the nurse not turning up, and they were like "oh yes, she's left Plunket now". I don't like Judith, she didn't listen to me and treated me like a dumb young mum when I had Andrew. Didn't read anything that was sent to her about Andrew being in hospital after birth the fact we had to go back and the reason why I couldn't b/f him. I was so angry with her.

I think I know the old biddy you are talking about and she so needs to give it up.

Does sound a lot of bother for 1 bottle a day, could you pay for it if your gp gives you a script? As I understand the only benefit to having a specialist prescribe it is the subsidy? could of changed since we went down that road. Our dietician prescribed it before we left hospital

Its obviously helping and giving you the break you deserve

Yay for a good weight gain, must be a relief. Are nuts ok? They have high fat content too.

Tararua plunket are great. Yes I've had Judith since Alia was 6 weeks old & she know the differences between my two kids which is awesome, she is so helpful & supportive.

Cooper was 81cm a month ago. I think he did a big growth spurt just around the time of seeing the paed so he looked skinner than he was. All this bloody rigmarole is just because I wanted to give him a bottle of formula during the day! Mummy wanted a break!! I'm not sure who I have to convince. My GP is onside & is writing letters to the paed recommending he prescribes it. We have had the same plunket nurse since Mr 9 was a baby and she is lovely! I have heard some horror stories though about some real old dragons so I am so glad we have a nice one!

Great weigh in!
Milla was the same weight at that age, although I expect shorter than your little guy, she was 11.25 at our last weigh in and is 82cm - so there is hope and definately sounds like Mum knows best for him to be gaining so well - Is it just the dietician you have to convince for the neocate ? We used duocal which is another calorific formula - but only for a wee while when we were waiting for surgery

I agree with the processed food thing entirely, but I cant get Milla to eat meat - only ham and luncheon -and beans - like kidney beans etc - you could try that too maybe

Jo, the dietitian wants him up on the 50th% at the moment he's at the 15% which is an increase. My PN reckons we'll get to the 25% and that will be good. He's on the 75% for height. The nurse today said Oh what a bonny boy...she's looking at his tummy which is usually quite round & not at the ribs etc showing.

We don't eat preservatives or additives in our house so unfortunately that cuts out a lot of prepackaged foods, majority have soy in them anyway even if they are dairy free.

I have tried avocado. He seems to like it, I need to do a specific test to see if he tolerates it. Egg seems fine although he doesn't like it so much.

Oh the PN was horrified that I had to give his meat a couple of chews before he'll eat it. He will not eat it any other way & believe me I've tried. So this has to be the next best thing to help get it in him. At least he has gone back to eating chicken by himself! Super weigh in: 9.12 (8 May) up to 9.32kg today. She started on at me, saying why are we doing this & that babies don't need much milk over a year & was surprised I was still breastfeeding & said he's going to be thin cause you are, I said no I have lost 15kg I am not normally this weight. She was just give him milk, um no he's dairy intolerant/allergic.

So then she goes on to what I feed him. What about baby rice...it has soy in it, oh what about...it has soy in it!

She started coming around to understanding & said maybe he's celiacs. Right, as if I need to cut out pasta!

She was very pleased I feed him porridge though!

She said you know Plunket doesn't get paid for these visits! They only get paid for the certain ages check ups. I said Judith is the only one supporting me & giving me extra idea about how to get weight on him ( I thought that is what Plunket is about, supporting the health of under 5's in the community!)

She also didn't understand the lack of sleep thing! OH my grandchild is like that at 6 months. I said yes fine at 6 months but not at 12 months & not 2 hourly wakings! Then she was like Oh I suppose he's been on losec since he was little, I said no since Jan & yes he needs it cause we forgot it one weekend & it was hell to pay.

I just wanted to get in & out of there. I said can I leave the door open so my CC can play out there & she said no the door has to be shut & shuts it with a 15 month old unsupervised in the outer room!!!! I said I will be bringing her in then thanks!

How little is he? if you dont mind me asking

My girl was little and has made it to the 50th percentile now, I dont have the same issues with dairy / soy though
What about olivio spreads ? made with olive oil.. Can he eat egg? I agree with avocado too, My girl was not into it at first but likes it now, on her toast sometimes
And she looves rice and peas mixed together which is great carbohydrate for growth

What about luncheon and ham? Im just brainstorming for you, must be incredibly hard to feed him with those restrictions - some times I have no idea what to feed Milla

I'm also lucky in the plunket nurse I've got, I was pre-prepared to have a bad one from all the stories I've heard and turns out I was lucky because others in my antenatel group weren't so lucky and have got a couple of shall we say, difficult plunket nurses.

Dont forget Avocado as a great calorie booster, DS likes it on sandwiches / rice cakes and loves it on its own - its pretty much the only green thing he'll eat tho so he has a couple every week!

Unfortunately I can't feed any dairy or soy so that rules out the typical "fatty" foods either via breastmilk or solids. I'm managed to source some Neocate from an OB friend so we've only introduced just that for now, hopefully he'll have a big enough gain that my Dr can say that it's working & to just prescribe it!

He definitely feels fatter in the arms & legs & his nappies are getting tighter so they are all good signs.

Oil appeared to basically go straight through him. You could give her yogurts, cheese slices. I've been told 2 proteins a day as well. Have discovered after weeks of meat refusal that I need to chew it first. Hope he's put on lots of weight tomorrow! We had Plunket yesterday and I was told to put oil in Chelsea's food to increase calories too... What things are you doing instead of that? I haven't given her oil yet, lol, but I did put butter on her sandwhiches today (which was PN's other suggestion)... I have to go, he needs to be weighed. I want to prove weight gain on neocate & his current diet. Dietiation's idea of gaining weight was adding oil to his food.

My plunket nurse is totally lovely, a great support & an asset to our community. Can't say that for this old cow I got on the phone today!

BecM...that is horrifying! I did all the exact same stuff with Cooper & my plunket nurse supported me. mine was crap, figured that with all our hospital visits we didnt really need there old fashioned ideas so we canned them altogether

My first one was actually lovely, but somehow I ended up with this horrible old goat who said that babies natural sleeping time was 8 pm and i should add salt to her food

I have a heart kid FFS - Im pretty sure salt is not required thanks! and I Milla goes down at 7 - has done since she was 8 weeks old - which is when we met this silly old bag
Have spoken to someone else there who sounded like a patronising old biddy too - and i actually cancelled the appointment - so I think your very brave for still going in - Im not tolerant enough for people like that

DD's 1st Plunket nurse (in Dunedin) was the most wonderful lady, I even looked forward to her visits!!!
The one we have since moving back to Hawkes Bay is ok but its like she is just at work IYKWIM She is lacking personality and I get the feeling with younger bubs she might be a bit 'old school'

I ended up in tears when I first met my PN. First she told me off for side sleeping him in a wedge then I started crying about my difficulties feeding (DS would come on and off, scream, arch back etc, and was eventually diagnosed with reflux) she shrugged, said it could be wind or hunger or anything, looked and her watch and me sobbing, and told me it was time for her to go and that parenting was "tough"!

What I might do is wait until I see my plunket nurse again & complain to her. She will give me guidance on it.

How rude of her!!

My plunket nurse thinks I'm slightly insane, but has learned that being nasty to me doesn't work . (I'm a weirdo hippie who uses chamomile tea for teething & tummyaches, and only gets out the pamol in extreme emergencies!)

How terrifying what they did to your DS1, Jazzy!! Some of them are quite neurotic about checking all the boxes they're supposed to, I know after my DS was admitted to hospital for failure to thrive at 10 days old my midwife got in lots of trouble, and once we got released from hospital would come around every single day to weigh him - and threatened to send us back to hospital if he lost any weight (even if he'd just had a big poo or a big puke!). You would think there would be other things to check out before invasive tests, not surprised you ditched her!!

COMPLAIN, A&C's mum. Nobody should have to have someone grumpy & condescending inflicted upon them, especially not new mums.

Not sure of her name but she's been doing it for 25 years with 12 years in Hokowhitu so it probably the same one. DS1 has the worst PN ever she said cause he was not putting any weight on that he had Cystic Fibrosis so he had to go to hospital & be strapped to a table & have tubes down him & have heaps of test. He was only a few weeks old I was a new mum & there was nothing wrong with him & she wondered why I changed PN? My PN is lovely, I had her colleague last visit and she was a complete bi*ch! She went on and on about already being back to pre pregnancy size and saying it would affect my milk and my baby wouldn't be well nourished, well she soon shut up when she saw Lily had gained 1kg in 3 weeks!
She even had the nerve to ask how the sleeping at night was going and I said I get up about 3 times but it didn't bother me and she said it was my fault and my milk wasn't filling her up for the long sleep.

I've always had a fantastic relationship with my plunket nurse & have never quite understood why people b*tched and moaned about them, but now I know why!

I just had a plunket nurse on the phone to check why I had an appointment & she was asking why i'm taking Cooper in when he's already had his check & was quite condesending to me about that they don't normally do weigh ins & the paediatrian should be doing the weight. She went on to tell me that how long she'd been a plunket nurse blah blah blah All in this condesending tone!!

I was extremely worried that my plunket nurse was finished but thank god she's only away tomorrow!

So much for supporting Mum's in the community! Thank god my normal plunket nurse is such a gem, plus she's been through dairy allergy.
