yeah they do csections ive had 2 there im more high risk thats why im going NSH im cool with that..

I have to admit it does amaze me how under resources Waitakere DHB is, given the growth in the population, particulalry with maternity care as its a fairly young population too.

One of the reasons that high risk is not allowed to birth at Waitakere is that the blood bank is not open 24hours according to a midwife I was talking to. They do C sections but they won't take you if you are overweight something to do with the anesthetic - I'm not too bothered - my MW can deliver at NSH and they're much the same distance from where I'll be living.

I'm pretty certain Waitakere does c-sections as I very nearly had an emergency one there. I got shaved and everything. C wasn't coming out fast enough. From memory, they don't normally do surgery at Waitak and only have a general medical ward, no ICU, 24 hour lab services or anything. I think it was only about 5 years ago that they got 24hour anaesthetics cover.

Waitak is massively under-resourced. They have the only ED for West Auckland, but can only open it 12 hours a day b/c of staffing and logistics. It basically used to be a small country hospital in a big urban area and is very very very very very slowly coming along with the times. The DHB itself has been way underfunded until about 3 years ago so I guess had to put it's resources somewhere.

NSH isnt so bad Kymme, I had a really good stay in maternity. Was there for 11 shift changes and only had one bad nurse/mw and even though they were full and understaffed I never had any problems... It will be for emergency purposes... if you need a general the risks are higher if you are "medically" obese and waitak dont have the staff or facilities for it.. you would need to be transfered to NSH and in the case of needing a general then things have to be hairy to begin with! Dont think I would want to take the risk... On my hospital notes a complication noted for my c-section was obesity I only had an epi and was under 100kg.

My midwife didn't give me a reason, just said I can't give birth there due to my weight, that they wont take me.

At a guess I would say the added risk. If something goes wrong they may not have the facilities to fix it. Has anyone given birth at Waitakere hospital and been overweight?

We are moving to Whenuapai in October and I'm due in November, I had planned to give birth at Waitakere, however I have been told if your BMI is over 35 you can't.
