Author: Aprilfools
Subject: 33748
Posted: 31 May 2010 at 8:41am

Harper had his first last month and we've been keeping an eye on him overnight as he's a bit 'off'. Not nice at all. Even though I'm used to seeing people have seizures it still came as quite a shock coz he went unbelievably grey and looked so little. His temp went up then down then back up really really fast.
If you want to help keep the temp down put luke warm flannels under the arms and on the groin. A bit of vinegar in a luke warm bath is supposed to help as well. I'm not sure if they have given you anything but if not go to the drs. The hospital didn't give Harper anything so after seeing the dr the next day and starting on antibiotics he was fine but I was still up every two hours for 3 or 4 nights checking his temperature. If you have a good relationship with your gp then perhaps go and have a chat with him anyway. I had a really good chat with mine who gave me some good advice to help keep his temp down next time he starts to get a temp.
I'm sure they went over it with you yesterday but it happens to 1 in 20 children so quite common and they grow out of it around 5.

Lots of hugs, hope she's feeling better today and you've had a good night.

DH was away for the weekend and it was the absolute WORST moment of my life. I had never heard of them and I thought she was choking (because she had a cold and had been snoring). I called the ambulance, it was about 2am, and they knew exactly what it was as soon as they arrived. They were lovely and the hospital staff were lovely but I was an absolute wreck. It took me about 2 days to get through it and I couldn't even mention it without crying. At the time I thought she was going to die.
I had too many layers on her. She was wearing a vest, pyjamas, socks and her go-go bag and then I'd brought her into my bed to keep an eye on her so she had my duvet on her too. They tested her for a urine infection but she was clear, she just had a cold and overheated. Here is the info the doctor printed out for me.
Big hugs to you! Hope Chelsea is doing better this morning.

Apparently they are mainly due to a fast rise in temp, generally accompany a common infection (like an ear infection), and are relatively harmless. That said though, it is horrifically terrifying seeing your child have a seizure and I can understand that you must be feeling pretty freaked out. Have a chat to your doctor and see if they can put your mind at ease.

She grew out of it before she was 5 and my Mum had lots of ways to keep her temp under control, like luke warm baths (never cold) and lots of luke warm flannels compresses on her head, also making sure she was not too warm in bed at night etc. My mum was told that it is more common in fair skinned, fair haired children for some reason and my sister is very fair.

I hope you don't have to experience them again and that Chelsea is on the mend HUGS to you, I remember to this day how scary it was.
