I got done last year lost my license for 6 months stupid stupid decision but it hasn't really affected me that much a little while ago I wanted to be a paramedic you do need a clean license so I don't know how I would've gotten on but you can't be a cop with a DIC conviction. my little brother was done he was 2weeks off being 20 and he was above the youth limit but below the adult limit so was STUPIDELY annoying. He lost his license for 6months and luckily he had enough people around to drive him. my ex-fiance was done for drinking related offences (pretty sure a DUI was on there) he's aussie born, flew over for the 05 BDO, got held up in customs on the way back as it came up with a flag as they just call it a drug related offence in the system. He was held up in there for over an hour trying to explain that it was alcohol and not drugs (he'd never been done for those)

for the traveling thing...you can travel to most countries as a visitor and not be affected by a DUI...most arrival forms only ask if you have been imprisoned in the last 12 months...

If your friend was thinking of emigrating to another country eg Canada then they may not get a visa, depends on the country. NZ passports have visitor visa free entry in to a lot of countries due to reciprocal arrangements the governments have.

My DH and my SIL have both been done as well - loss of licence for 6 months and a fine. DH got a work licence from memory as he HAD to drive for his job and there was no way around it (he was running a commercial lawnmowing business). It definitely hasn't affected any travel.

I have been done, only veryy very very little over (like 404 insated of 400 and under), she should be able to travel to most places , cant be a police officer here and there are some people that like to judge you before they get to know you. other than that it hasnt stopped me from doin anything at all

Well that is good news for her...she plans on doing quite a bit of travel in the future, but not to Canada as far as I know.

Its funny actually, so she is normally very responsible and she is one of the last people I thought this would happen to.

Its a miracle that my DH hasn't had a conviction as he use to be a heavy drinker and often drank and drove (before we were married). Thankfully he has given up drinking (been 4 years now) and hasn't had a drop since. I feel so much more at peace knowing we don't have to deal with alcohol related situations anymore.

One of the girls in my antenatal group was really worried cos her dh was a big "social" drinker (as she called it). She was due over the festive season and he refused to not drink even though she could have gone into labour at any moment! That would have made me furious.

Its amaziing how much trouble alcohol causes!!

My DH got done, while young and dumb (way before we met). His is probably a bit more of a extreme case, he caused a accident, wrote off both cars, ended up in court, lost his license and had to pay reparation. He's still paying off his reparation now, but shouldn't be for too much longer (of course, he HAD to crash into a BMW, didn't he?).
He lost his license, that wasn't too big a deal. He got a special license for work otherwise he'd have lost his job, he does a LOT of driving around the country side.

He can't leave the country until his reparation is paid off, but thats not a big problem. He won't have problems traveling as he's not on a NZ passport, he's on a european one. So in that sense, he could probably force to leave the country, before he'd paid off his reparation. But no point. He'd never be allowed back, and its home here now.

It was one heck of a lesson for him. One really expensive one at that! But he's so much more mature for it now.

It's affected our insurance. Although hes 26, I'm 20, *I* own a Subaru (from before we got together), my excess is $500, his is $1000 just because he's got a drink driving conviction. I think it depends how much over they are.

My friend also got done, she had to go to court and got charged. Had to pay a fine, court costs and lost her license for a few months.

My friend who got done also had a friend who was in a similar situation, except her bf was driving and they swapped seats and she got done and when in court they started talking about jail she confessed and ended up in a whole lot more trouble! Not me...but a friend at uni did and I think she couldnt drive for 6 months. And she can't go to Canada. And...she went into ECE and had to write a special letter to the college/uni to get accepted explaining her actions/lessons blah blah etc.
Overall, no, it has not really effected her.

A friend of mine got done for drunk driving, she lost her licence for 6 months and that was pretty much it. She didn't have any problem travelling etc

Depends does loss of licence effect her work, for some employers it does.

I don't mean to pry, but has anyone been convicted for this...or know someone who has.

I good friend had a really bad lapse in judgement and tried to cover for her husband who had drunk to much and offered to drive them home. She ended up being over the limit and got caught.

I am just wondering what implications anyone had as a result...e.g with travelling overseas etc   She certainly isn't one to drink and drive normally, but just made a big mistake, and now she is freaking out about all the things that it might affect
