In baby and child by penelope leach she says kids are going to be toilet trained when it suits them so f you start at newborn and they are fully trained at 1 and a half thats still a lot more times you have to put them on the potty than if you start at 1. I tend to agree with this also I'm lazy.

Its called Elimination Communication and isnt actually toilet training... cause at that age they cant take themselves can they.
it is all part of being in tune with your newborn and getting them to tune into you so that when you give them toilet cues its almost second nature for them to go...

oh and i imagine tho that you would have to go thru some sort of toilet training also to teach them to get undressed etc...

That was horror at having to be with your kid 24/7 btw

I'm all for the toilet training from birth thing if you can be bothered.... Personally, having to learn how to deal with a newborn on its own was a struggle enough without having to learn to "sense" when they wanted to go to the toilet. (Though the pooing face really does give it away... I'm not sure there is any special ability to "sense" there )

Ok so it all sounds awful now doesnt it, potty training a young baby. I totally agree that they grow so fast why speed things up any more. I don't think I could be bothered trying to potty train Alex now anyway. There are a group of women in Nelson that have their kids wear no nappies from birth and hold their kids over a bucket to go to the toilet or something?? They "sense" when the kids need to go.. and no worries about baby pooing in bed at night because apparently they don't poo when they are asleep... okay im going to state my opinion ...but im not wanting to offend anyone, so i realise it mightnt be everyones!

Caitlyn was potty trained when she was about 2 and a half, which went pretty smoothly, she was out of a nappy at bed by 3 and a half, but thats different for every kid of course...she was not potty trained from birth but has no lasting side effects lol.

Her dad however and his wife have an 11month old son, and while its entirely their choice how they parent i did get a surprise last time we went to stay with them...
At 6 months they had Sam on the potty to do poos...he couldnt actually sit up by himself and was held on.
Yeah he "went" on the potty...but if u sit a baby anywhere without a nappy eventually they will go....because unlike older children they cant hold on...because they have no control over there bladder or bowels, this is not a natural thing but something that is learnt.
I had heard about it before i was pregnant but decided that there would be plenty of time to deal with toilet training and its only a few months out of ur life anyway, and id let my baby just be a baby for a while first cos god knows they grow quick enough anyway!

My mum told me I was toilet trained just after 1 as I hated the feeling of cloth nappies. I would take them off and thats why mum got me on a potty so soon. my mum had us 3 kids toilet trained by 2yrs and my MIL had DH toilet trained by 1yr!

This coming from somebody who has no experience what so ever... but I read that babies can't be properly potty trained at a very young age because they don't have control over their bladder and bowels at such a young age. I can remember seeing something about a group of Wellington Mum's who'd started an Infant Potty support group. They had trained their babies to pee when they whistled or something or other.

I didn't go there - I'm happily soiling up the environment with a garage full of disposable nappies....I figure the landfill they have developed on at the end of the motorway has provided valuable land for more 'look the same' housing, the weather is nicer warmer (global warming) and more sea can only mean more swimming (rising sea levels), right? And perhaps I'm inspiring such great movies as The Day After Tomorrow?

Hi Ladies,

While I was pregnant I read an article about potty training babies from a very young age. It was an American article which refered to an American book, that I couldn't find in NZ, and ofcourse now I have forgotten what it was called and who wrote it.

I thought it was a great idea to start potty training at an early age, in this article it basically said that when babies were born they knew when they needed to go to the toilet and could control there bladder/bowels but as we let them just go any time they soon forget such control. And so babies from birth could be potty trained.

Anyway I was interested in it, but having a new born baby I never thought of it again after Alex was born. Until my mum asked me the other day when I was going to potty train Alex, as her mother potty trained her and her 6 brothers and sisters right from the time they were home from hospital.

So, I am wondering if anyone out there has potty trained there baby early??? And if so how did you do it, and how did it go??
