I am getting re-referred from a GP so hopefully they do something this time.

You do have to get referred from either a MW or GP... but they like you to have a proper assessment done by your GP first so that would be preferable than a MW (I spoke to them today). They need an assessment from your GP before they can help or get involved and they said it didn't have to be severe before they got involved so that's good.

They are also posting me out some stuff and mentioned that counselling with medication is best, and Procare doctors can refer you to 6 free counselling sessions. It was similar for me newlywed....I was reffered to MMH for PND when O was about 5mths old, but they decided I wasnt "bad enough" to be under their care and sent me away with a list of books to read and told me to get counselling (at my own expense). I never had any follow up from them at all....and basically just had to sort my stuff out myself. I was very dissapointed and am worried about what will happen this time around.

I was actually wondering what kind of support Maternal Mental Health are meant to provide? I was referred by my midwife prior to giving birth and they told my midwife that I should go back to my GP to monitor signs of PND and that was it! Because of my history of depression and other risk factors, I thought I was a sitting duck and had heard they provide extra support during your birth and post-natal care but I had nothing. I had to get referred from my GP, i was told the sooner you do it the sooner they will be in touch and even after the baby is born, otherwise if you wait till then it can take quite a while. I received lots of phone calls to chek on me, and never met with them, as i was ok.

I think she can self refer or she could talk to her mw or GP and they would be able to refer her. I don't kow too much about MMH as I am being looked after by my GP

Hi ladies.
A friend of mine has just found out she is pregnant and has had to come off her anti-d's. she is freaking out and i think she would really benefit from being under the maternal mental health team. She is based in Auckland. How would she get referred and is this the right thing to do?
