Riley has been a tummy sleeper since he was about 3 weeks old, he just sleeps best that way and like others have said he has great head control and was able to hold his head up from birth. For the first couple of months we would put him on his back at night as he was swaddled but he used to get his hands out and wake himself up so we started putting him on his tummy.

I put him with his hands up by his head but most of the time now he puts one down by his side and the other one still up with his thumb in his mouth.

Oh and I told plunket he sleeps on his tummy and they were horrified so I mentioned I have a monitor and the seemed to calm her - I didnt mention its not an angelcare one just a sound one

after reading this thread with dd asleep on top of me, I put her down on her tummy and shes still asleep!! normally she wakes up!!

I think most kids become tummy sleepers. DD has been since being unswaddled. Sleeps on tummy will cuddly underneath her. Its so so cute. DD has been a tummy sleeper during the day since she was new. She sleeps on her back at night but that's only because when she was younger i couldn't sleep when i knew she was on her tummy.
Her hands go wherever she feels comfortable at the time. 80% of the time they are up by her face but she will often put one down by her side.
I have never told Plunket about it either. our four have all been tummy sleepers. I'm finding Koby sleeps so much better on his tummy - hands up by his head.

Mac's hands go where ever they fall. Sometimes (most times actually) they're up by his head but sometimes he puts them down by his side.

Hey, my bubs is also a tummy sleeper, she hated being swaddled and fell asleep so much better during the day that way so we ended up putting her down that way at night too. I've never really worried shes been able to turn her head since day 1 basicly (at 2 months she can hold it up herself when supported sitting ) anyway as soon as bubs can move head I wouldn't be worried. I leave her arms free and encourage her to put up near her head but she keeps them by her side and uses her back muscles instead.

Clodagh's beena  tummy sleeper from the minute she could roll over lol. I"ve never worried about it and just made sure her head area is free of extraneous 'stuff' about it.

She sleeps with her hands up by her head normally or sometimes by her side. Up until she was 6 months old we ALWAYS put her to bed on her back but gave up once she started rolling lol

Angus was a tummy sleep from 3 weeks, only way he would sleep well. I never told plunket. hehe. I def didnt wrap him and made sure his arms were free. I did check on him a fair but he was always fine. He is still a tummy sleeper now and sleeps 12 hours a night, although i do put him to bed on his back! You can always just tell plunket you back sleep

Lily slept on her tummy when she was a NB but mw told me not to so I stopped and now she hates it so we have to constantly swaddle!

Nat's been a tummy sleeper since maybe 5-6 months - amazing how much better she (generally!) slept when we put her down that way. She did have very good head control, and we just made sure nothing could get bunched up under her. Mac has slept on his tummy since 3 weeks old.
We stopped wrapping him once we did that so his hands are free to push himself up. Also we felt pretty confident with it due to his really impressive control he had over his head from the day he was born.

Fir the first week or so I kept waking up to check he was still breathing but now I don't even give it a second thought.

Plunket will tell you to keep trying to put bubba on his back. And I keep telling them to come deal with the screaming baby

My boys have always slept on their sides, tilted towards their tummys but swaddled so couldn't do fully tummy sleeping.
I'd def do it during the daytime, Liz, coz you can check him. Jurys out on night-time for me coz I can't decide whether I'd be happier that they slept well or worried about something happening while I was asleep!

My toddler did when he was a baby. I slept him on his tummy from the moment he could move his head by himself properly (3mths). It's only a no-no because people dont make sure baby is safe! Hell, when I was a baby they reccomended it! My 3 month old sleeps sooooo much better on his tummy. I know it's a big 'no-no' and that concerns me a wee bit. But it's amazing having a baby who actually sleeps in his basinette.
