Been taking lots of pics to keep those images... nothing beats looking down and seeing him fall asleep happy and warm with a full belly, and holding on tight like im his blankie

Well we did do the move into the cot - and there's so much more to see there.... Had to get her up and do a few swift rocks to calm her down at one stage and put her back down. But the move had to happen. Gosh knows what we'll do if we go on holiday... She's not very transportable. Will have to get a portacot and train her before we go.

One really good thing I learn about settling... is to give them a really good swift rock if they are worked up, and then a slow one, a fast one etc etc (push if in pram) and then just before they fall asleep you should be down to almost no movement...

If you get the chance to have her visit, I highly recommend it. She's kind of a baby whisperer type person, as well as having been a lactation consultant and paediatric nurse, and has some really useful tips for all the stuff we keep talking about here (like settling etc). She gave some really good tips about helping Emma self-settle, and they seem to be working ... she's fallen asleep by herself twice in the past 24 hours which is unheard of!

AFM, I have nearly got Emma fully weaned onto bottles now. Only one real BF, first thing in the morning, so I'm really happy with that. Hopefully I'll be able to drop that feed too in the next few days.

    Author: RubyBaby
Subject: 34467
Posted: 24 June 2011 at 12:01pm

OMG I feel for all you women not living in the Waikato/BOPish area!! Mothercraft is fantastic... I am so confused as to why they don't have them all over NZ!!I am actually going back for a second week because they haven't quite fixed Jacob yet!

Ok this is their way of doing things, and at first I was really not keen, but I have seen an improvement in Jacob, so I am going to do my best over the weekend and see where we go from there.

My problems were that Jacob was feeding every 1 1/2 - 2 hours and was not sleeping through the day. He was sleeping 11 hours at night without waking, but we have established that this was due to pure exhaustion!

So.. they say to let a 3 1/2 month old baby go 4-5 hours between feeds - for Jacob he should be sleeping most of the time between feeds, and should only be up for a maximum of 1 1/2 hours - put to bed sooner if showing signs of being tired.

They are adamant that babies should be wrapped - tightly! Up to the age of about 6 or so months.

So put baby to bed, once (if) they start crying leave them for 10-15 mins, then go in and check they are still wrapped (Jacob was forever getting out of their wrap until they let me use my miracle wrap), and check that they haven't done mass poos (a quick sniff of the air will tell you this - don't need to worry about little bit of poos, but lots and this might be what is upsetting them. Only pick them up for one of these reasons.

Then either put a dummy in - if they are used to being fed to sleep (Jacob), put your palm on their cheek and keep it there till they are settled. Like your boobie is right there. Try rocking the cot, which is easy with their old flimsy cots, but hard with the newer sturdy cots, or try patting them. ONce they are settled, leave. If they start crying again, leave them for 10-15mins again and repeat the process. Eventually they try rocking or driving round the parking lot in their prams (old fashioned baby carriage) with them all tucked in, just to see if they can get them to sleep. Otherwise up after 4 - 5 hours - they like to leave them to resettle up to about 4 1/2 hours, but if they don't get them up, otherwise, if they are asleep at 5 hours, wake them up.

Then they get an hour to feed, then half an hour for playtime. Jacob only got 1 hour, because he was just sooo tired.
We established after a few test weigh feeds that he isn't getting enough - I have the supply, he just isn't getting it (belly too small, too lazy, too tired, poor latch - take your pick).

Will continue this later as my sister has just arrived!

Edited by RubyBaby

We've been put onto something called The 3 day Sleep olution and it sounds like it could work so I'm going to give it a go.

Kat, The pick up put down technique is you put your baby to bed and when they stary crying you pat them and stroke their head. If they don't settle then you pick them up and pat their back until they stop crying then put them straight back to bed then repeat until the baby is asleep. In the end Seth would start crying as we were lowering him into the cot and would not stop until we would pick him up. We tried for several days but it was just not working. In the end mum rang plunketline and they didn't sound convinced that it was a viable method of teaching him to go to sleep.

    Author: ArielAngel
Subject: 34467
Posted: 22 June 2011 at 4:11pm

Lillease – that sucks that Seth is being so inconsistent. I’ve thought about trying the pick up/put down technique – definitely let me know more about how you are getting on with it.

Kat – We used to hold A to get her to sleep but that quickly became really time consuming especially as she would often wake and start crying when we put her into her cot, so now I have my own CIO method. I put A into bed singing her a lullaby with white noise going, then I tuck her in, kiss her and say ‘love you, sleep well, I’ll see you when you wake up’ – she almost always will grizzle or cry when I put her down. If it is more of a grizzle I’ll wait ten minutes before going to her, if it’s more of a cry then I’ll wait five minutes and if it’s full on crying then I’ll wait up to three minutes – when I go in I pick up her and give her a cuddle and sing her a lullaby three times then I put her back into bed, and repeat the process. Sometimes she’ll go down right away with a couple of grizzles and then right off to sleep, sometimes it takes ten minutes, sometimes half an hour – very rarely does she cry on and off without going to sleep for more than an hour (at which point I would get her up for feed/play/sleep anyway).

Karen – my understanding is that Plunket advocate CIO/controlled crying. I don’t like listening to A cry which is why I have the three tiers – sometimes the three minutes while she is full on crying is more to give me a break because it can be so hard trying to settle an unsettled baby. It’s amazing the number of times I’ve waited five minutes of grizzling/crying and been about to walk into the room and she’s fallen asleep!

My one travel tip would be don’t stop if you baby isn’t crying even if it’s been two or three hours since they’ve been fed/changed. I know that babies shouldn’t be in their carseats for too long which is why we stopped after two hours but then A was really really unsettled (full on crying for almost an hour, and then on and off for another hour after that!) once we put her back in after a feed/change. I think she would have lasted a lot longer without crying if we hadn’t stopped.

I couldn’t believe A was teething already either! I feel so sorry for the poor poppet – I can definitely see a bit of tooth sticking out at the bottom right hand side, not sure whether the whole thing will pop up. It’s just quite frustrating as lots of things they suggest to help soothe teething babies don’t apply to those only three months old! I’m going to try some Weleda teething powder and might have a look at some smallish teething toys (small as in, will fit in a three months old mouth) – but otherwise I guess we have to ride it out!

Anyway, A is finally awake so better go!

Hope you are all going well and keeping warm!
She will only fall asleep while being held which can be very tiring. I'm not interested in letting her cry it out, or even controlled crying, so hopefully there are some useful suggestions.

We are off for our first big road trip this weekend - up to Nelson. The longest car trip she has done so far is 45 mins, so the 4 hours to Nelson will be interesting. If anyone has any tips, these would be greatly appreciated. AFM, I'm still getting daily dressings on my former breast abscess - the nurse says she's never seen anything like it, which is not that reassuring, but at least it is finally healing. Hopefully then I will be able to get Emma fully weaned onto formula - she is helping the process by refusing the breast sometimes (which can actually be quite uncomfortable, as I can't express my sore boob, because the dressing is in the way).

Hope everyone else is doing well ... It seems like sleep is still the big issue for most of us.

We were on holiday in Taupo and he slept in his own room there and did fine, so we decided it was time to move him on out of our room at home. He is doing great. Last night we went out to dinner and he slept the whole time in the Moby wrap. I was able to move his in/out of his carseat and into his crib unswaddled (he is usually swaddled for most sleeps). He, again, did well with that and actually stirred less than usual. He didn't even need me to get up to put back his dummy during the night. I am a happy mommy.

Have been leaving his legs unwrapped and hes ok with that, but he hates his arms being 'free' Jae was the complete opposite, would fight it until she was out, then go to sleep. Not sure how to wean him off being wrapped eith, I dont think the ones I have will last much longer as hes getting too big!'

I know of a cple of mums who have used it and found it so helpful. I wish we had something like that in Akld! Ana' has been much more settled and happy over the past 3 days. I think we've finally got her reflux under control and perhaps she's outgowing the colic? I've noticed that she gets overtired very quickly and if I don't get her swaddled and ready for a nap in time she looses th eplot and is impossible to settle. I still rock her to sleep in my arms for every sleep .

LL. luckily you went to hospital! Hope you're starting to feel better. No offence, but I can't believe they gave you so much panadol, esp as you have PND. I think it's pretty irresponsible of the Drs.

BK, so pleased to hear the BF is going well

AFM, I'm still in QT but hope to get back home tomorrow. I'm so keen to get home, back to my usual routine. DD1 has been pushing limits and DD2 has been sleeping terribily since we've been away. I'm wondering whether to shift her to a cot (from her moses basket) when we get home, as she's been in a porticot while away. Although saying that, she sleeps better in her basket..Have many of you moved your babies to cots yet?

Jacob was crying before he got them, and was crying after. The DR actually said to me today, I really don’t understand how you do this. Are you sure you are ok? Wow that was nice, I was beginning to think he thought I was blowing it all out of proportion, but the way that Jacob was screaming the whole time and arching his back, even he was surprised.
I have my referral though, and go to mothercraft on Monday. So looking forward to it. Not looking forward to being away from DH for a week, but if they can help me with my boy then it will be worth it.
He’s asleep now though!

We are not even wrapping Jacob at all at night now, last night he slept 10 hours. Still wrapping during the day, mostly cos it calms him when he is having a screamfest.

Karen (and Mum2QTs if you are out there) hope you are both doing ok. Big hugs. I can’t imagine how awful it is.
Our power has gone off a couple of times in the last week, and its driving me barmy, DH pointed out that at least we know its gunna be back on shortly, imagine what its like for ppl in CHCH... so yeah, I can only imagine.
Mum2QTs I’m sure that is one good thing about heading off to India, you are not going to have to worry about the shakes.

LL – big hugs, you’re going through a lot right now huh? Glad you went to the hospital though!

Wow its crazy reading your guys baby weights at 12-13 week checks being 5.something kgs... I thought Jacob was massive at 6.8kgs, but at coffee group I was talking to a the other mums, and one has a little girl who was 6.5kgs at 10 weeks, and the other a little boy who is... 6.5kgs at 7 weeks!!!!!! He doesn’t even look that big, but he is solid as!!

Well dinner is cooked, washing is up to date, I am going to make the most of what little quiet time I may have left and read for awhile!!
Tuesday afternoon I started to feel shakey, hot and light headed. I was going to head to my mums for the night but I didn't think it was safe for me to drive. After a little while I decided that heading to the hospital would be a good idea so I got my nana to look after Seth while I went to get checked out.
Well! It was a good thing that I good checked out as my temp was 39.6 and my heart rate was 145bpm. I have a sore on my elbow and one on my collarbone and I was worried that they were infected. Seems they were!
So I stayed the night at the hospital getting fluids and IV antibiotics and soon felt much better! 20 hours after turning up at the emergency dept I was discharged with some really hard core antibiotics and more pain killers than I have ever had before! 72 strips of paracetamol!!!

At just over twelve weeks A is now 61.5cm and 5.6kg - long and skinny! She was due to go down for her nap right when we had our Plunket visit so she was pretty tired by the time we got home - put her straight into bed she made a couple of little quiet grizzles and then was out like a light!

I didn't want to believe that A had reflux but she is a much happier baby now she on Losec. I hope those side effects settle down for you though.

PND - My Plunket nurse asks how I am feeling and whether I am getting out of the house. For the most part I feel good - I'm sure the occasional bouts of tears are bought on by hormones and/or lack of sleep!

Plunket - I really like my Plunket nurse. She has been a midwife aswell so I think that helps. She's not judgmental either and has a way of giving advice which doesn't make you feel like a terrible parent.

We had a terrible nights sleep last night - A woke up every 1-2 hours from 8pm so as you can imagine I didn't get a lot of sleep. She's had a couple of 1hr naps today but a silly courier banged on the door earlier and woke her up from what would have been her nice long nap (I usually get one of around 2-3hrs). I've just put her down again, hopefully she'll sleep for a while - I'm sure she needs it!

Oh, and the 12 week/3 month shedding of hair has started - I'm glad that it was mentioned in our antenatal classes (and elsewhere) as otherwise I'm sure I would have been freaked out at the amount of hair coming out in the shower and when I brush!

You should ask your PN about any parent groups in your area when you see her on Tuesday. Glad to hear that you went to see your GP. You can always support them in other ways - like being on committees etc that support/fundraise for the Plunket rooms/parents centres/play groups. I attend a Plunket playgroup, mainly for DS1 who is 2, but it is a great place to network with other mums and make new friends, and some of the mums who attend are on various plunket committees and they ensure the rooms have appropriate toys, playgroups to meet different community needs etc. People have quite varying experiences with plunket nurses, but there is more to Plunket than that.

Are you signed up for any support groups? I'm going back to therapy again soon. I think cause DH is actually "getting to me" that much. Apart from having his income a lot of the time I feel like a solo mother... Really sucks, he may be very involved for 3 hours a day on the weekend and perhaps 30minutes on the weekdays....

belle - I hope it comes very difficultly to her when she has a child! I know it's mean... but seriously... you can not underestimate how hard it can be - it can also be very easy for some people - which seems totally unfair. I realized it could be hard, but not that hard!!

My plunket nurse is BRILLIANT by the sounds of it - she books the next appointment at the one before, I think we're ahead of schedule... We had two home visits at about 5 and 8 weeks then another when we went to clinic at a 11 and a bit weeks (that was a the 3 month check)... We have our next one booked in for July I think at the end - for the 5 month check (she will only be 4.5 months)
On our first visit when she saw how concerned I was about weight gain she was SO quick at getting me sent through to someone. She's a real gem actually, lovely woman... Might have to go ahead and mention to Plunket how pleased we are with her!

He checked out Seths ears because I thought that maybe they were troubling him but they're fine. We've started on Gaviscon and Seth is actually enjoying his bottles now. Before I would have to burp him every 50mls because he would spit the bottle out and not want any more. Now he takes a full 100mls to 130mls without stopping and LOVES it. He's so much happier now. His sleep is still terrible though but it's getting a bit better, slowly.

The doc also agrees that I have PND and so started me on Citalopram. Even after only 5 days I'm feeling calmer and more able to cope. It's great. The side effects are a bit weird though.

Ah yes, FFing guilts. I have soooooo been there. I'm still mixed feeding most feeds but I still don't like having to give my boy formula. I had a massive cry to the LC about it back when Seth was only a few weeks old and she was awesome in reassuring me.

The xbox day didn't go quite as planned lol, they ended up watching a movie instead.

I would call them and give someone a bollocking.

All the health professionals I have talked to have completely supported my decision to FF, with comments like "I don't blame you" and "Well done for BFing so long", which sure helps. I just wish I could stop already but need to wait untl abscesses are completely cleared.

Emma has decided that the only place she wants to sleep today is in my arms. My GP is very supportive with us FF, however I had a Plunket nurse tell me I should have stuck with BF and my supply would have increased, and it's not really that hard. When I asked her how many kids she had her answer was none, so I guess her attitude will change when she's had one!

As for being asked by Plunket how I'm doing, have never been asked. It's lucky I'm not having too many issues coping, just the usual frustration at baby not sleeping and feeling tired myself. I'm kind of loosing faith in Plunket, Sophie is 15 weeks today and we have had a total of 2 home visits. Is this normal or are we missing out? After the first visit at 6 weeks we didn't hear from them for 1 month. When I rang and asked if I was meant to be going in for visits they had no record of us at all, apparently our file has been misplaced or lost. They came the next day, but I'm still waiting for another visit since 10 week check. I'm not to worried, Sophie gets weighed and checked by our GP (who is also a pediatrician) when we need more Gaviscon, so maybe I'll flag Plunket all together.

RB and Amalyse I know what you mean about babies trying to pull one over you, Sophie has started doing an ear piercing scream when she wants something, usually when she can see I'm getting a bottle ready, obviously I'm not doing it fast enough!

Hope your Dr's appointment went well LL, and things are starting to get a bit easier, or you are getting plans in place for extra help and support from DH. It can be exhausting trying to look after a baby and keep the house in a half decent state on your own. Especially when the person who is meant to be helping is attached to the XBox!

    Author: travelchick
Subject: 34467
Posted: 10 June 2011 at 11:44am

Morning all! Haven't been on here much cos FB seems a lot more convenient for some reason.

Just popped on here to see what was happening and I see the BF vs FF guilt is the main topic of conversation. I have a lot to say on this, mainly because I have FF both of my boys after being completely hopeless at BF.

With DS1 I BF for 4 weeks, well actually 'tried to' is probably more accurate. Mostly I was expressing and bottle feeding and topping up with formula during that time as it was so painful to BF. I couldn't bear the pain and dreaded every feed time. Even though I had guilt and torn feelings about deciding to exclusively FF, looking back it was the best decision for our whole family - DS1 got a decent feed every time, I wasn't in pain therefore more relaxed and able to enjoy being a mum and DH didn't have to come home from work with a stressed out, bawling wife.

With DS2 I 'tried' to BF for a week. I had the same pain etc with DS1 and ended up not actually having much milk anyway. I wasn't even able to express enough to feed him therefore he was mostly getting formula. I decided straight away that I was not going to stress about not BF and just enjoy being a mum and having a precious wee baby that I thought I would never have (IVF). I also knew that I couldn't afford to be stressed, tearful etc when looking after a baby and an active toddler. I have been able to cope so much better this time round - partly because I have 'been there done that', but also because I have accepted my decision to FF and I am happy that that is the best decision for our whole family.

I have reflected a lot on both of my experiences and this is what I have concluded:
- BF isn't the be all and end all of being a mum. There is so much more to our job than feeding our children.
- What we feed our children should not rule our lives - if people are able to BF successfully and easily then awesome, that is definitely the best way to go, but if BF is a stressful and emotionally draining process for the mum then is it really worth it?

I felt some guilt about not BF, but to be honest, I think most of my feelings about it were due to what I thought other people might think about me if I didn't. My Dr is awesome and made a very valid point - women are really hard on each other and have some sometimes unrealistic expectations of each other, and put high expectations on themselves too. If we all just gave each other (and ourselves) a break the stress that comes with being a first time mum might not be quite so extreme.

Anyway, I hope everyone is well and managing to get their washing done with all this wet weather. Thank goodness for my dryer!
I had to wean him suddenly because I was prescribed Seroquel to help me sleep (was it you asking about that Amalyse?) which you can't take while BFing. I've been so conflicted about whether to try to start again (have been expressing and they still work!) but am now trying to accept that what's best for me and ultimately for my son is to stick with the FFing and not look back.

A VERY hard decision to make and I'm going to my counsellor on Saturday to try to work through the guilt and feeling like a total failure. But for me the pros outweighed the cons for FFing so I'm trying my best to remember I'm doing this FOR him not TO him, and he's a happy healthy thriving wee man no matter how he's fed. A very personal decision and not an easy one to make so hugs to those struggling with it too

Whew there's finally silence from his room... I'm so glad he's gone to sleep after crying on and off for about an hour, he was overtired from too much going on this morning (went to mums and baby yoga class then into town) so now I feel guilty about that too! Hope he stays down for a few hours as he's such a lovely smiley little guy when he's had enough sleep but beside himself when he hasn't.

Might go have a nap myself, have been waking up at 4am feeling great but it catches up with me later.

Did anyone want the Gaviscon Infant sachets we no longer have a use for? Emma has just discovered her fists and is now slobbering on them (and anything she may be holding) any chance she gets! Also, reflux babies are often much harder to settle (we have to cuddle Emma to sleep). It was much harder to get her to sleep before we started losec, now it is SOOO much easier.

The difference between gaviscon and losec ... Basically (as I understand it, and I'm not a pharmacist or doctor) the gaviscon thickens their stomach contents, making it harder for them to spill, and so they reflux less (hopefully). The losec, actually reduces the amount of acid their stomachs produce. Losec is FAR more effective at controlling silent reflux, but gaviscon is good for the 'happy chuckers'. What we found is that, almost the day we started losec, we could put Emma in her bassinet awake and she wouldn't scream (although she doesn't settle), and once she was asleep we could put her down and she would stay asleep (for some period of time). Before that we would cuddle her to sleep and then (very carefully) put her down and hope to hell that she wouldn't wake, often unsuccessfully.

    Author: RubyBaby
Subject: 34467
Posted: 08 June 2011 at 9:43pm

Man I so love coming on here, and seeing all the support and love and hugs etc that is being shared. Its great to know that we have got somewhere to come even if it is virtual. You ladies are awesome!

Plunket today... my 12.5 week old baby is 6.8kgs!!!!! Little fatty!!

Mirsty I don’t know what the difference between gaviscon and losec, I think losec is just stronger. Good that your DH keeps an eye for signs of depression... I have a family history of it, and so DH is good at keep an eye on me too.
Over the last week or so, I have had a couple of people ask me how I cope with Jacob screaming (including plunket nurse and my mum). They say most people would have lost it by now. Honestly I am surprised that I haven’t lost it. But I know I have to hold it together for Jacob. Who’s gunna take care of him and help him when he is in pain if I don’t. I think I need to make a little sign that says “See what you put my through, its my turn’ and take a photo of him with it when he is screaming, then lose the plot when he is 25 and show him the picture and make him take care of me. Would be entertaining.

Yah to see you back Anja... hugs, but glad you are doing better now
LL hope the boys xbox day went well, and you got a chance to have a break as well. Hang in there love, and I hope that you get the reflux (if it is that) sorted, and PND sorted. Good that you are doing something proactive about getting help

Marengo, I don’t know the ins and outs of why you are Emily’s Dad aren’t together anymore, but don’t blame yourself for that. By the sounds of things he wasn’t giving you the support you needed anyway (sorry if I’ve got that wrong). But if ending things with him was the best thing for you and Emily, then you did the right thing.

Hi newmum2011, welcome to the group...

Has anyone else’s baby started eating their hand. Jacob has all of a sudden found his hand, which is great because he has never taken a dummy, so hopefully he will use this to self settle. Have wrapped him with one arm out for the first time tonight. He has grizzled a couple of times since we (well DH, I was out grocery shopping) put him down, which he doesn’t normally do, hopefully he will make it through the night.

Chamalie, we totally have the same child, word for word is exactly my problem. I can’t help at all. The lovely ladies here reminded me that you’ve just gotta do what works. So if this means I hold Jacob for his whole sleep then this is what I do. My GP has sent a referral for me to go to Mothercraft so hopefully I can get some help with getting him to settle (cos nothing works), and then I can pass on some tips. I’ve learnt not to stress too much about him not sleeping. I keep reading things about how much sleep they should be getting, but I can’t MAKE him go to sleep, and otherwise I just get so frustrated. Do you have a frontpack?? Jacob will sleep in there, so I try to go for a walk for an hour each day so I know he is getting that much (whether it is around the block, or window shopping, or even leisurely doing the grocery shopping).

Totally understand apologising to baby about giving a bottle. I remember the night about 8 weeks ago, when I was absolutely sobbing and holding Jacob while DH was at the supermarket buying formula. I was so set on exclusively BFing (because of GD it was highly recommended that you exclusively BF for 6 months) and I really felt like I had failed Jacob completely. But I am more accepting of it now. Most days Jacob is exclusively BF, however there are some evenings when he gets a bottle because my supply is so low. My motto is, it doesn’t matter where the food is coming from as long as baby is getting fed! (and it meets the WHO recommendations or whatever – wouldn’t be supporting anyone giving a 3month old a Big Mac to chow down on).

Sorry for the essay!! Have a good night ladies!

Edited by RubyBaby

Society puts enough pressure on us, without us putting more pressure on ourselves. A happy mum and bub are at least as important as breast milk in a baby's development. Also the first few days and weeks are the most important, so even if your bub only got a day or two of colostrum, s/he has already had a good start. Just remember this - if you stand at the school gate you will not be able to tell which kids have been bf'd and which have had formula.

So true Karen but OMG the guilt we put on ourselves! I have been 100% FF Declan for 14.5 weeks so you would think by now I would have gotten over it but I still beat myself up every day. I don't have PND but I just can't seem to get over the feeling of being an utter failure because I wasn't able to breastfeed. My logical mind tells me he is happy, healthy and I am so lucky to have such an amazing boy and I AM a good mum because he wouldn't be those things if I wasn't but some days I convince myself I am such a waste of space and no matter how hard my mum or DH try I can't seem to believe otherwise.

I will be better prepared next time but honestly I do worry that if it doesn't work out again I am going to be even more of a mess!
