and another point - they will probably never have to share their name with someone else in their class.

Rachel wasn't a common name in the UK at all when my parents named me - then when we moved here, it was quite common. When I was standard 1 or so I was in a class with two other Rachels!!

It is pronounced pretty much exactly how it looks. Like Five, but with an F instead of a V.

When I tell people what my girls names are they hear Emma and Eva. I think that's accent related however.

When people see them written down they say Eye-mear and A-o-fee

Only thing is, will you get annoyed if people call him Travis? That's what I immediately thought when I saw the name and had to re-read it. If the pronouciation is similar then he may be forever correcting people - not that that's a reason not to use the name though.

We love Tavish as well, if this one is a boy he will be Tavish or another Scottish name I prefer Tavish and Dh prefers our other option. Tavish was on our list for #2 . I loved the name sooo much but we went with DH's first pick.

If we ever have a 3rd we have decided it will be Tavish.

Our daughters name is Irish and our second daughters name will also be Irish...and quite hard to spell but hey the family link is there and NZ is a very multi cultural society, people will get used to it lol

I think it's rather cute, I know someone who has that as their last name. I say if you both like it then go for it! But are there any other names you like as well? As maybe wait until he is born then decide the one that suits him best?

I really needed some opinions, but didn't want to tell family or friends yet as I would like the name to be a surprise when bubs is born.

I like it. It is nice to have something to remind them of their herritage. If you are unsure you could always use it as a second name. If you like it go for it, I nearly didn't go with my girls names but it was members here that convinced me to go with what we wanted rather than what we thought would be considered normal here.

Like clover said there are lots of made up names out there. Based on my experience so far, I've found NZ to be very tolerable of names that are considered unusual.

I quite like it (but I come from a Scottish family so it isn't that unusual for me). Kids will always find something to tease about if they want to. There are plenty of 'made up' names out there much odder than Tavish so I think if you like it go for it. There are some wee girls on here with lovely Irish/Gaelic names and I think they are lovely and unique.

My husband is Scottish, our first son has a Scottish name, and we thought we would have a Scottish name for number 2 aswell.

He really likes the boys name Tavish. However, I really don't know what I think of it. It is unusual, and I kind of like it, but do you think it is a name that will get picked on? And do you like it?
