I didn't have it... was a conscious decision as I felt it hadn't been tested enough on pregnant ladies.

DH had it though, so felt reasonably happy that I had some protection that way. Sandie, you can get it in the first trimester, I did as well. If we couldnt then medical professionals wouldnt allow us to, so dont worry. It was recommended to me to get it in the first trimester as I would be exposed to it early on.

I have never had the flu jab before...I work at the airport dealing with international travelers so never saw the point but when I confirmed my pregnancy my GP suggested I get because it has the swine flu vaccine this year...

I don't want to get it, but my Mum works at Auckland Hospital so she could easily pass it on to me even if she doesn't get it her self. I decided to wait until I'd had my baby..Which wasn't long at all. I had it when he was 6wks old. I'm prone to being sick. And I have asthma. So I got it. Theres been a few cases in town and I decided I'd rather get it then not..

Just spoke to my MW about it today, she said she just had some extra info, and they don't use the "live virus" in the vaccine so if you have the vaccine you won't get it as such, so it is safer than I thought. She said mortility rate among preg women who get the swine flu, so I think I will be safe and get it this week. ooh thanks for reminding me. I had been meaning to get it once out of my first trimester, but you know how it is with unpleasant things. dh is a school teacher and they have had record numbers off sick with the flu in the past week. So will definitely be getting it, as somehow he always manages to get it and pass it on to me. grr at the receptionist at the drs, when I told her I was pregnant she was like, its probably not a good idea. I have just had it last week. I wasn't going to have it, but I work as a school teacher and I have had a terrible chest infection and about 4 colds, and a flu did the rounds of my class just recently luckily I did not get it but I don't want to take the risk again. You do have virtually no immune system when pregnant it seems, so what you might not do normally you reconsider in pregnancy. Thats how it was for me anyway.

It is a totally personal choice, for each to make on their own depending on benefits and risks and personal situation. I believe in my job teaching 5 year olds in a low decile primary school I have a high chance of getting sick, so I wanted to protect myself.

I had it at 12 weeks. I decided that the benefits outweighed the (incredibly unlikely) harms. I had the flu injection in the first trimester as thats when my work was offering it. I decided to have it then rather than wait as I didnt want to take the risk of looking after people that may have swine flu. The information that I reviewed prior to getting it didnt say not to have it in the first trimester, its one of the medications that you need to decide what is best for you, whether you have it or not and when.

Talk to your GP about it, as they're the best people to inform you.
That was where my MW directed me to go to, as their (mw) belief is you shouldn't be taking anything you don't need during pregnancy.

In the end I opted not to have the flu vaccine, mostly as I've never had the flu and considered myself low risk. I work in a small office with 4 other people and use my own car to get to and from work.
If I used public transport or lived in one of the higher risk areas I may have gone for it.

I've been lucky and only had 1 cold this winter the only downside of that was not being able to take any medication for it. Recovery was prolonged as a result. 3 weeks to get rid of congestion which would normally only take 1 week to 10 days to end.

I am generally pro-vaccination (as some of you will know ), but for the most part, I have always thought flu vaccination was unnecessary, and I have never had one.

However, having just been through the last few days with what I believe is the flu (and I don't say that lightly....I don't believe I've ever had the flu before, and I also think most people who say they have the flu really just have colds ), I would recommend getting it.

I haven't been so sick in a long time, and I believe the fact that my immune system (in particular the innate component which is the first 'part' that fights off viruses) is compromised, as all of our immune systems are compromised during pregnancy, has made a huge difference in how my body has coped. Any help your body can get would be worth it - remember it may not stop you getting the flu, but it will lessen the severity of it.

I haven't done research into the particular strains they are vaccinating against this year, so that may be worth doing. I felt it would be irresponsible to not pass the information on. I'm not telling her not to have it done I am suggesting she should look into it before having it done, that is all.

And yes some people are well informed but sadly the vast majority are not and wouldn't even think for one second that our government would be giving out a vaccine that was rushed to market not fully tested because different rules apply under pandemic conditions.

Pandemic or not, it is the flu strain that is the dominant one in NZ right now. The who is expected to state that there is no pandemic, perhaps you should ask if it's even really necessary, considering how untested the H1N1 vaccine is as well.
