Her and her hubby couldn't decide.
We had a list of 3 names for each sex, and it was hard coming to that list, as we have very different tastes. We decided that we would see what baby looked like, before we named baby. He was definately a Jacob. A compromise, i wanted jake (after blues brothers, as well,Liz!) I didn't tell anyone the names we had picked, and we won't this time either, and we are going to find out the sex, as my dad isn't expected to live for very much longer, so we will find out and tell him and mum, but no one else. Names are harder, this time round, as I have gone off the rest of the names on our list... *sigh*
If its a boy, i'm plumping for Elwood... (joke, blues brothers fan...)

Grace I just liked and Willie picked Te Irirangi Marama.

Wth the twins, we named Mercedes first, as soon as I told Willie they were girls he said he was naming one of them Mercedes because he drives a Mercedes truck (really glad that he doesn't drive a Volvo!). Sienna was harder as I've always loved the name, but I knew it would upset a friend (as I'm sure we all also know lol) but in the end I decided bugger it - I have to live with calling my daughter that for the rest of her life, and no other names seemed to fit.

Sienna is Sienna Marie Anahera, Marie after my Mum and sisters middle names, and Anahera meaning angel which Willie picked.

Mercedes is Mercedes Something Waimarie, Waimarie means peaceful waters which I think is beautiful, but we're having trouble coming up with a middle name. Toying with Kailah atm - my mum really likes it.

We toyed with both Ethan and Liam, both of which I really love as names, but luckily we decided on Joshua as Jono's boss's wife had twin boys a month before Joshie was born and named them Ethan and Liam!!! For a girl we could not decide on anything! Charlotte, Jessica and Maia were possibilites (although MIL took wildly agin Maia - think it was because of the lesbian on Shortland Street???)although I adored the names Lily, Isabella and Ella but Jono wasn't keen. It's hard deciding on names!! I always thought it would be easy, but boy was I in for a shock!!

    Author: daikini
Subject: 3539
Posted: 22 August 2006 at 2:33pm

Kiya's name (pronounced kii-yah) is from a movie (Willow), and is a name I'd loved since I first heard it. I played around with a few different spellings, until I figured out one I liked. As her bio father broke up with me before she was born, I didn't have to worry about his opinion. Other than my cousins having fits of laughter telling me that the same word is rastafarian slang for marijuana (yeah, like that's common knowledge at her primary school!), I heard nothing negative about the name. Her middle name is Mary, same as mine, although it nearly was just initals: V. O., in memory of my much loved Nana who passed away a year before Kiya was born. However, my Dad told me that Nana actually didn't like her name and would not want anyone to be named after her so I decided not to.

Josiah's name (pronounced jo-sigh-ah is biblical. When Nathaniel and I first started dating, we went to a youth conference where one of the speakers used the 8 year old king as an example of rising appropriately to the occasion. Nat and I looked at each other, and both said "I like that name!"... and we just kept it in mind. When we found out I was pregnant, it came back up as a possible name and we felt it was right. Josiah's middle name is Phillip, same as Nathaniel.

Xavier's name (pronounced ex-save-ee-er) was a little harder... I went through my baby name book many times suggesting names to Nat, to have him say "I know a kid by that name... no." (Ah, the joys of being married to a teacher!) One evening, we were having a bath and flicking through the book when Nat said "What about Xavier?" I thought about it for a minute and said "yeah, maybe"... over the next couple of weeks it stuck! Choosing a middle name was a little harder, but in the end I suggested Max, as it seemed to fit, and Nat really liked it.

We had no idea what we were having with PAris - i had gone through loads of baby books and baby sites writing down names that i liked, i would sit on the computer at night and go through sites and read out names alphabetically and mike would be "no, no no no" with the occasional, "that's kinda ok,, maybe" But eventually he came up with the name Paris and was adamant that if it was a girl that it would be Paris - then for middle name, i was thinking olivia.. but initials would have spelt POT so mike said no, and came up with Harmony... but for boys names - nooooo idea.. I was still sitting online the night before i had her trawling through name sites to try and find something we remotely liked that met Mike's approval.

We went though and thought of nicknames for each name we liked, what initials might spell, other people we knew with that name etc.

For Ayja, we thought we were having a boy for some reason - and had decided on Leo as our boys name and had nothing for a girls name - so when the 20 wk scan showed she was a girl.. we were like "uh-oh!" and again we went trawling through name sites - but this time we knew we had to have something just as unique as Paris's name. Ayja came from the model Aja Rock - it was down the very bottom of our list of possible maybe middle names... and slowly bit by bit made it's way to the top. some we didn't like, some my MIL made comments on, others me and Mike just couldn't agree on.. Then one day i was having a shower, thinking about names - and Mike came in to put some washing in the hamper.. and I said "what about Ayja Nicole?" and he said yep and that was it.

It all depends i spose on what you like. Do you want to include family names into it somewhere, do you like traditional names, James, matthew, etc etc, or do you want different names, and if so, are you sure you want something that everyone else seems to be calling their kid at the same time - if you choose something different how are you to know that it's not too out there and the child won't be made fun of at school.?
It's so much to think about and very daunting but the others are right - you will "just know" when you reach that right name. We had some back ups for in case Ayja didn't look like an "Ayja" but i don't think after naming her a few months out from having her, and calling her that up until then.. that we could have changed it.

We had a mini list of the names we did agree on but would regularly go and cross off ones that we'd gone off but Ashlee was always there, as was Sophie but we hadn't made a firm decision right up until she was born. When we were in theatre and she arrived, hubby said 'what are we going to call her?' and we took a look at her and decided she looked like an Ashlee

The 'lee' part is mums middle name and I have a sister named Haylee so it was nice to be able to carry the Lee on for a third generation. Hope it continues!

Before we knew we were having a girl, we had a couple of boys names picked out - one of which happens to be my brothers name but that wasn't going to stop hubby and I from naming our son after him! If we have a boy next, we'll probably have the same names picked out and our kiddies will probably end up with the same initials which will be cute.

I highly recommend you have a few favourites chosen and decide when she arrives to see what she suits.

DH's father packed a little hissy as the first born male is spose to get "Barnabas" as the middle name. Our come back, it's a family name that goes with his brother and he is the one to pass it on. My feeling with family names are great if they are normal names (like the William thing - nice simple name) but I ain't giving my child a wack name just because its a family name and I stuck to it. The first thing my family in Oz said when they were told his name - "After a great leauge player Andrew Johns". We didn't even think of that.

I had my girl name stolen by a friend of mine so i'm keeping tight on any names we decide for this one if we can find out what flavour it is.
