update: got the manduca and LOVE it . did my first back carry today and josh fell asleep almost instantly...

Love my manduca and use it nearly everyday! Its great, super comfy (DD is 11kg+) very quick to change strap length etc.

We have an Ergo and a Kozy carrier for back carrying. My fav is the Kozy, so easy to put on as no need for hip scooting. The Kozy carrier website has instructions on how to back carry with a newborn in a Kozy on them. I may try it with this new bub :) Though I imagine our Moby will still get quite a bit of use. I tired an Ergo and didn't like it that much, mind you I"m pg and it just didn't seem to fit right under my bump. But I would LOVE to be able to afford a Manduca....might be the next thing I save for hehe

I adored my Moby till I got pg and Clodagh was 10/11 months, and will be using it for the new bubba. A friend has lent me her Piccolo to use and it's bloody awesome, just fits my tall preggy figure well lol . I was also lucky enough recently to buy a Kozy which I am still learning to use properly with a back carry for my 15 month old but so far it's not bad at all

I love my beco too. For me its much easier and safer to get in back carry position. I tried getting her on my back with others and it is harder than it looks! For me safety was first priority, the fact that the manduca can lengthen is not as important, as the beco is still long enough in the back. Back carries are not recommended with stretchy wraps, they aren't wide enough and are too stretchy.
You totally 'need' a woven wrap as well.

I have the Patapum and a wrap and both are equally necessary

weegee that video makes doing a back carry so easy!! sooo wish i could come to a slingbabies meet to see it done in person... does it need to be a woven wrap, or will my stretchy one do? I can totally reccomend back carries with a woven wrap . They are all nice and snuggled and secure, I get the best sleeps out of DS in the wrap. But I would wait till he's older.

I didn't put DS on my back ( in a Patapum) till he was 3 ish months but he was 8.3 kg

And HM you can show me a SHBC with Tibetan finish too please

Beco's are pretty but I wouldn't recommend if you're planning to use them mostly for a back carry.

I liked the Ergo but found it was quite short in the torso for my (slightly tallish) toddler whereas the Manduca can be lengthened (weegee or HM can explain!) as the child gets taller.

Mei Tai's are tied; Manducas and the rest all have clips so are really quick to put on. I was going to say pretty much exactly what HippyMama said

A SSC is similar to a Mei Tai, just it has zips and buckles (bells and whistles!) instead of straps - I guess you sacrifice a bit of customisability in exchange for ease of use, so I understand you can generally get a more perfect fit with a Mei Tai.

If only you were in Auckland and could come to Slingbabies to try them out!

I suppose if you were to always use the sleeping hood that might offer enough head support for a little bubba.

Addie is younger than Josh, she also has pretty good head control, and I've been carrying her on my front in the Manduca every now and then. It comes far enough up that her neck is well supported, but it does take a bit of jiggery pokery to make sure her legs are in the right position first.

Hmmm, you've got me thinking now, I might see later today if I can get her in then swivel her around to my back and watch in the mirror to see what it's like (will leave her in there long enough to take a photo for you, doubt I'd feel comfortable to leave her in there though).

Since you have a wrap carrier, there are some good instructions and videos on newborn carries (including back carries, although that's only recommended for people who are really confident with their wrapping skills - not me!) on this page

Keep in mind that with the Manduca (and I assume other SSC) they say don't use it for back carry before 8kgs.

Although in saything that my 15mths old is only 7kg and I back carry her. Not to say that the other carriers aren't worthy but I really really REALLY love the Manduca, and at times have considered ditching some of my other carriers to get a second one even

I am trying to decide the exact same thing at the moment. From reading another thread it seems a lot of people recommend the manduca and after doing a bit of reading on it, I think I am going to go with it.

so i'm totally hooked on baby wearing - especially now i have two kids to juggle - and already have a wrap-style carrier and a dulce & zoet sling, which i LOVE.

but i want to get another one and have narrowed it down to either a manduca, ergo or beco... which would you recommend??

I want it mainly for back-carrying since i don't like doing that in either of my other carriers, and would like to be able to back-carry both babies (josh is 5.5kg give or take, with really good neck control).
