I am 35 and my risk came back 1/350 and I have to pay for my amnio because I'm considered low risk.

Issacsmum - amnios are not that high risk! def carry more risk than US of course... but many studies these days say they are actually much lower risk than the .5% that is often quoted...this is because of the advances in equipement and experience. If the amnio is carried out by a Dr who has alot of experience they are low risk....

Edited by freckle

And congrats for getting preg after trying for so long, how exciting!!!
I can give you some advice, one of the bosses here got preg at 40 (baby is now about 11 weeks old, very healthy etc etc) and she was very worried about things given her age etc. I know that she definitely had an amino as she was advised to by her specialist, and it was not to do with her NT results (which I seem to recall were fine) but to do with the age she was. You'll be pleased to know all went very well, and the only time her specialist said her age was a little against her was when it time came for her to push him out, but all went fine. Best of luck for your pregnancy! So very cool when you have tried for so long! It must be the right timing if you did ivf etc and nothing happened then, just trust in God it will all work out right... that's wot got me through the first panicky part (we "tried" for 6 months, but when it actually happened, I freaked out for abit!!!)

There are risks associated with an amnio, so they generally only want to do one if there is good reason. Your odds indicate that your baby is fine, so they probably wouldn't want you to risk the amnio.

I presume if you really wanted it, you could insist anyway, but I don't see the need?

Firstly, CONGRATS!!

Are you talking about the 1st trimester screening results? I think possibly the obstetrician would be against it because amnio can increase your risk of m/c. Your results seem to be very low risk so maybe the obstetrician couldn't justify the risk of the amnio?

I think they start worrying at 1/250? I could just be making that up of course ask your midwife for clarification! That's her job.
