I have two kids and my elder daughter never swore, but the boy actually did. My wife is blaming me in that saying that because the boy was not going into any sort of extra curriculum classes and seldom read books, he now has an idle mind. He was even falling behind his essay schedule and we had to ask writehistoryessay.com to review his drafts that they fortunately did. I feel so guilty because of that. I wouldn't consider them swearing and have said them all in the past but now we have a little one, I try to hold back on saying terms like that as I know they are offensive to some people. My wee neice for example (6yo) goes to a Catholic school and she has pulled me up on a few occassions for saying 'swear words' so I now say 'oh my gosh' etc.
I must say I'm pretty bad with the 'real' swear words like sh!t, f*ck etc. DF is a shocker as well. He is Irish so every second word is 'fook'. It's funny tho cause my neice tells me and her Mum and Dad off when we say the F word but she doesn't notice when DF says it cause it sounds different lol
I never aim swear words at people, just say them for example if I were to stub my toe I'd probably say 'sh!t that hurt'. I certainly don't agree with kids swearing tho. We live down the road from a primary school and the words that come out the 5-6yo's mouths as they are waling past our house after school! It's dreadful! One little kid said to another little kid the other day 'F**k off you ugly c**t! the words themselves do not bother me. it is the context that they are used in that makes them swear words.

Those sayings are not offensive to me, as I am not religous is any way, but I wouldnt want my kids running around saying them.

None of them bother me at all. I wouldn't say "go to hell" but do say the others pretty regularly. I'm not religous as all so I don't find them offensive in that way. Not really sure why they're even in my vocab considering my stance on religon.

I didn't want my kids to swear . Then C started school , its amazing what they pick up there .
She very rarely swears at home, cos she gets the "look " from me , but im realistic and know there is a lot she probably says out of my earshot, both swearing , and blaspheming .

I'm a Christian so I find these really offensive, TBH. I would be horrified if I heard my kids saying them.

BUT I often say "what the hell", and "damn", but I would never say damn you to hell or go to hell or anything similar. I do think these are swearing and I will be trying to teach my child not to use them. I dont like it when people say them as a swear word and I dont use them. Thats my conservative christian upbringing coming out.

Yeah C&J I have definitely found giving it attention only encourages it more... we just ignore it now...

I don't say bloody hell... just bloody... I don't think kids sound nice saying it either but it doesn't carry the same meaning to them - they just copy what they hear and I guess to them they're words ya say when your frustrated... I don't say Jesus Christ and I don't like Go to Hell as that's usually said to someone, I don't ever use those words. Good Catholic upbringing seems to have set those in stone for me.
I tend to say Oh my gosh or Oh my goodness instead, as I figured some people might not like Oh my God.

They are really at the lower end of the spectrum when it comes to swearing and not sure how I will react if / when our daughter says them.

As freckle said kids will parrot anything you say, and not sure whether drawing attention to it will only make it worse. C asked if we could pray the other night . I said dear Jesus Christ ,and she promptly stopped me and informed me that you should never say Jesus Christ , ever , because thats what her dad and stepmum had said .

I do consider them on the swearing spectrum but at the milder end of it. Bear in mind I'm a Christian so try not to use "oh my God" or "Jesus Christ". What the hell does slip out as does with OMG (when I'm online!). I also come from a super conservative family - when the Bugger ads came out, Dad was one of the people who wrote to the Broadcasting Standards Authority. Unfortunately, whenever Dan sees ball sports (he thinks they're all soccer), he lets out a very loud, excited "BUGGER, BUGGER" We have had to translate that a few times

The "Oh God" would not bother me too much, DD has actually started saying it and I must say I don't like it so have changed myself and now say gosh, but it is better than the "oh S***" she was saying.

I am really not that keen on blasphemy at all and someone saying Jesus Christ would probably offend me more than F***, but I did go to a Catholic school and even though I don't consider myself religious as such blasphemy is just crass IMO. So stupid really considering I swear a fair bit.

I don't normally swear, but do tend to say Jesus Christ a lot- Ella has started to copy me, which doesn't bother me but as DH is catholic he doesn't like it so I am trying to not say it now (and have noticed that since I have stopped saying it, so has Ella).  He was really worried she was going to shout it out in the middle of the church during Tom's Baptism thankfully she didn't.

I say oh my god and I don't really consider it swearing... I also say bloody and bugger and I dunno where they fit in with swear words either... My two year old is an absolute wee parrot and does say all of those words although I try to discourage them but it's hard to stop her when I say them... However, in the scheme of things she could (and sometimes does) say I don't find them too much of a concern... Her dad slips up with the F word every now and then and it didn't take hearing many times for her to cotton onto that one...

Those phases are all banned in our house - I don't like the sound of them coming out of kid's mouths. I don't use that at all, usually only say sh!t... No one in my family says it either and DPs side are catholic so haven't heard it their either.

I have a sailors mouth when it comes to the regular swear words but they are used towards inhuman things. S#@t and bugger and the odd F word when something doesn't go right. I don't aim them at people unless it is an extremely nasty situation. I have done it once in a big argument in recent years since changing my thoughts etc. I find when you tell someone to go to hell you are affecting another human so it isn't ok. Damn you is the same. This also goes for jesus christ etc as I think it is offensive to some people so I just try and think of others.   Damn was a big no no in texas.

My kids aren't allowed to say anything although I know my teen age daughter is getting sloppy. One thing we are coming down on at the moment. It wasn't so cool to say these words in the states but since moving back to NZ she has really started using them. Maybe it is an age thing maybe a country thing. My kids even tried to get around what the hell as what the h-e-double hockey sticks. That was cute at first till I cottoned on and stopped it as it has the same meaning.

I don't consider those phrases swearing with my kids saying them, depends on the context, I can see them easily imitating DH and I when they do. I say oh my god/gosh frequently.

I'm more concerned about them repeated what comes out of DH's mouth, he works in an all male environment and frequently says M...F... and C... at the computer.

I went to catholic school and never swore till I got to intermediate school and only cause I was being encouraged to by school mates.. I think the worst I said was b*tch or sh*t, I did it front of a teacher and was mortified, didn't swear much after that.

I say those things myself, but prefer my children not to LOL There is plenty of time for swearing when they are older.

I have been working at religious schools for the past 3 years and maybe this is affecting my thoughts.

What do you consider "swearing"?

the usual suspetcs of course, but what about phrases like
"oh my God"
"go to hell"
"Jesus Christ!"- said in surprise

things like that

I went to J's school and someone was saying "Damn, blah blah, I got a hell of a shock" and I was a little disgusted to hear that from a 9 year old.

Then i felt old and thought, how conservative I've got.

But am I? How would you feel hearing these phrases from your child?
