Author: snugglebug
Subject: 35715
Posted: 13 September 2010 at 7:52pm

Hey Heaf, I was just like you at the start of my pregnancy.

With regards to the doctor, I went to the GP to have my pregnancy confirmed and had a blood tests and did another pee test. It was nice to do that just to be sure, and also you might not find a midwife straight away so it could be nice just to go and get the tests and also the GP can give you the form for an early scan if you want it. That's what I did. I got a scan at 6 weeks but didnt see my specialist till 8 weeks, so I wouldn't have had that if I didn't go to the doctor. But as others said, it's not necessary.

With regards to the food I was also very wound up in it at first. But basically what you need to do is eat things that are meant to be hot hot, and cold things cold. You can eat leftovers if they are heated up really hot, but I wouldn't do it all the time and only if they were refrigerated the whole time before.

I have eaten takeaways a lot in my pregnancy my specialist said takeaways like BK, MCD's are fine. Ive had chinese, pizza etc too and as long as you tell them to please make it fresh and hot you should be ok.

It all depends how far you want to get into it. I basically eat most things just not seafood or deli meats or soft cheeses or things sitting out a long time at suspect temperatures. I am also careful about dressings. But most other stuff I would normally eat I have eaten. It really is so much to do with temperatures more than anything else I think.

There is a food safety pamphlet you can get from the nz food safety authority it is a good help.

Re morning sickness, you can't stop it but if you do get it, there are ways to help like barley sugars, having something by your bed and eating before you get up, sea bands, dry biscuits and toast, lemonade and just keeping yourself full all help. You just kind of manage it as you go along. I was lucky enough to only have it for 3 or so weeks, and I never vomited only felt car sick, so you could be lucky like me you never know.

Pregnancy is scary and stressful but it's also wonderful so enjoy the ride and trust you'll learn everything you need to know along the way especially with all the helpful ladies on here. I found going to the GP in the early stages was great too cos they could reassure me of a few early concerns I had.

All the best :)

Edited by mrsh101

I found a very similar product that has saved me as I ate A LOT of hummus before...

Turkish Kitchen Kumara and Lentil dip...it uses red lentils instead of chickpeas and tahini so is okay to have!!! I eat a tub a week easy.

as for MS, dont think you can prevent it if you are going to get it...I second having protein with each snack/meal...I had it pretty bad (had lingering cough and chest infection to make it worse) and lived on mandarins and round biscuits with marg and cheese until dinner each day for about a month!!

(i got mine from the dr

Also if you do get fell a lil ill in during the day try taking your folic and/ or multivit at nite before bed rather than the morn
And congrats again

Edited by bumblebee

I am always wary about chicken and I also wont eat anywhere where I dont trust the cooking. I admit to having cold roast beef from a bakery that I trust so it is all about weighing up the risk. The risk of getting listeria or salmonella is small but it is definitely worth keeping the risk as low as possible and at a level that you are comfortable with. I did find it really hard to find foods that I could eat when I was out. McD's is fine as it is cooked fresh. I occasionally eat cabinet food from places that I trust but ask them to heat it hot hot.

for morning sickness eating all the time and drinking lots can help keep it at bay but nothing is guaranteed unfortunately.

Do I need to go and see my normal doctor as well?

oh and I spent the whole weekend thinking about food. i was so hungry the whole time but I didnt know what I could eat! I printed off the OB food safety chart thingy but was still unsure.

can you eat things like bacon? if its really hot? and can you have it on a sandwich or something if its cold? and salami's fine if you have it on pizza or something right? and things like leftovers...safe or not safe?

basically i'm wondering what you can eat, i don't want to go overboard on the whole eating thing, but I do want to be safe. What did you eat or not eat in your pregnancies? like what are things that you wouldn't touch with a 10 foot barge pole and what things would you eat if you were cautious with it?

also things like medications, i know basically you are only allowed panadol, but can you have strepsils and stuff if you have a cold?

so if you could give me a basic rundown on things you can/cant do/eat would be fantastic.

sorry if this has been asked before and sorry if i sound like a complete noob. TIA!
