Thanks for all the tips - having a car down there isnt an issue as I can use one of the in-laws whenever I need to, We have decided to drive though, as we cant justify such a huge (over $700 for the 3 of us) cost at Christmas! I have told DH that if we are driving we have to do it at my pace and stop loads! Thanks again for all the tips!

if you have to drive doing it over two days is better than one. are you driving down by yourself or with your partner. Do you have enough time to stop somewhere on the way down for a night? Or do you have to get there in one day?
We went on a holiday when I was 30weeks pregnant, and stayed in different places around the north island. I'm have just done this over the weekend at 32 weeks and flying wasn't a problem its only 50 minutes.

I am however doing the drive up in 3 weeks time at 35 weeks (we're moving and need to get our car up there too) Dh and I will share the driving and stopping frequently mostly for loo stops will be the main thing.

Its not so far you need to stop over night, we'll set off around 8.00am and normally its only a 8 hour trip I'm expecting to add a few hours for stops. Our usual stops are Taihape, Waiouru, Taupo/Taumarunui (depending on which way we go), Te Kuiti (lunch stop) or Cambridge, Narawahia (spl) Bp then through to Akl motorway. The Akl Motorway is probably the biggest stretch without stops.

I can come back in 3 weeks time and let you know how it went.

I'd fly too and pay the extra, to me it's worth it when domestic flights are so short in NZ but drive times are so, so long.

However, if you can't fly then I agree with lots of snacks and also lots of stops to stretch your legs. Depends on your pregnancy, but I found I had my burst of energy/period of feeling great between about 30-33 weeks rather than earlier when I popped out suddenly and really struggled. So, for me, it would have been a good time to travel. Different for everyone though..

I'd fly! sometimes it is worth paying the extra to have a nice time. I remember driving Welly - Hamilton when I was pregnant. I think I visited all public toilets between here and Hamilton

Help - we need to go down to Palmy for chrissy and I will be 32 weeks pregnant at that stage. Flights are going to be super expensive, but the thought of driving all that way with a huge belly leaves me feeling all panicy! Any suggestions for how to manage such a long car journey with a toddler and potentially grumpy pregnant mummy!!!
