The swelling is just above the cut line and the skin is red where it is hypersensitive.

I'll be 6 weeks post-partum tomorrow. Plunket nurse is coming this morning so I'll ask her about it and if she thinks it needs to be looked at then I'll go straight through to the doctor. Is the care up to 6 weeks free regardless of where you go? My GP is booked up for weeks so I usually pop into the White Cross for anything immediate.

I won't give you the full neurophysiological reason for it but basically this is the result when they cut little nerves during the surgery. It does get better with time but nerves take ages to heal so it could be months. I found I couldn't wear anything lose, the cloth brushing over the area would drive me nuts so I wore my belly bands for ages just to stop this.

Scar tissue can also grow badly and get all lumpy (keloid scarring). This is not ideal and it would be good to get someone to look at it to try some things to make sure this is not happening. Did you get some tape to stick over the scar? Constant slight pressure over the scar is meant to help prevent the keloid tissue forming.

I reckon go to the docs because if things feel like they're getting worse rather than better (pain and the lumpyness) they definitely need a check over.

If so then it could indicate an infection of some kind, otherwise it may be a build up of scar tissue, either way it wouldnt hurt ot get it looked at. Are you officially 6 weeks post-partum yet? If not, book in before the 6 weeks as post-natal care is free for those first 6 weeks, I found that out when I had a massive infection when my oldest was 3 weeks old and was out of town when it burst
