I had a blood test this morning

turns out i was worried for nothing though, the doctor that FIL went to see was wrong, and he went to his normal doctor who said that if it was shingles he would have had some blisters come up by now and that it was just a strained muscle!

but still got the bloods done anyway to check for immunity etc (and just in case).

A blood test is the best way to check to see if you have immunity to the virus.
I had chicken pox when i was 13 so am immune. Ds1 got the worse dose of chicken pox ever last year when i was 26 weeks pregnant. He had them for 3 weeks, got infected, just awful. I wish i had vaccinated him. ,
anyway my point is my sister was also pregnant about 24 weeks and she got the blood test to check as no one could remember if she had chicken pox in childhood or not. She was immune.

the blood test is a good option when no one remembers!
try not to worry, i worked in daycare if DS1 and was so worried about bugs and slapped cheek disease, but was fine. Shingles occurs when the varicella zoster virus (chicken pox) is reactivated from its latent state in nerve roots. Can occur in anyone who has had chicken pox before.

Only contagious if you have been directly exposed ie shingle pustules are weeping and open to the air and if you dont have immunity to chicken pox. C&J no shingles arent apparently contagious but they are a strain of the chicken pox so if you havent had that before you can pick it up.

kebakat i have to go and get bloods done this week anyway, would they be able to check in those or do i have to get a separate test done?

You can't get shingles from a person with shingles but you can catch chicken pox from them if you've not had them before. That would have to be via direct contact though, skin or saliva etc so chances are you should be fine.

There is a very small chance of harm to the baby, but the chance of you catching it is slim as is the chance of something going wrong with bubs if you do catch it. You probably run a greater risk of being exposed to these things in your every day life than just one meal with your in-laws.

Try and not worry about it, there isn't anything that can be done now. Not 100% sure the risk from getting chicken pox is towards the end of pregnancy and the risk that baby can get it when they're born.

I didn't think shingles was contagious though, what did healthline say?

chicken pox are itchy, don't know about measles

Hi just wanting a bit of advice...
Went out to the inlaws on the weekend and told them i was pregnant. Sat down and ate some dinner and halfway through MIL suddenly says oh crap thats right, FIL has shingles!! I don't know if you should be around him! so i told her to call healthline to check, and they said as long as i have had the chickenpox before i should be fine.

trouble is, i don't know if i have! when i was younger i had something, but not sure if it was the measles or chickenpox! i seem to remember the doctor saying it was measles, but i thought measles werent itchy?? and these were super itchy! (i think - we are talking like 15 years ago!) and mum can't remember either!

so should I be worried at all?!

and if i did catch the chickenpox or whatever, can that harm the baby at all or is it just really annoying for me?????
