LOL just posted in the other thread, but I loved my IUD until yesterday! Went to have it taken out and no strings to be seen. Have scan this Friday to see where it's gone, and then will go private to have it taken out ($$ we don't have, but NOT waiting for public system!)

Yep I recommend family planning to, my mw said to go for that exact reason, they do them all the time so are better at it. I had a copper IUD (had it removed a little while ago - so easy!) and couldn't tell if my periods were heavier because of IUD or because I'd had baby or hadn't had a period for 18 months. The periods evened out but because I use a mooncup which has greater capacity it wasn't a real pain (that I can recall). And I didn't have cramps either, like pre-baby - whether that was because I'd had a baby or the IUD, I'm unsure.

All in all, I'll get one again when required. Hormonal contraception makes me feel crazy - no thanks.

Edited to say: oh and go to Family Planning to get one installed/removed. They do it all the time and are therefore quick and efficient. I'd worry my GP doesn't do them regularly enough and don't fancy anyone fumbling their way around.

I also had heavy and longer periods with my plain copper IUD in (also can't remember the name of it lol). I'd need a pad and tampon on the first three days and had to change the tampon hourly! Then two days of medium flow and one day of light. I had the IUD inserted when DD was 5months and got my period back at 8months. It didn't help that my cycles were all out of whack from BFing so I'd have these six days of bleeding, then 2-6 days of nothing then it would start all over again Once she weaned at 13months my cycles spread out to a normal length so we'll blame it on BFing and not the IUD
Anyway, got it taken out in June and my next two periods were back to pre-baby 2-3 days and light. Then I got pregnant in August, so no troubles there

I have teh copper one, its free from the docs (which is why i chose it over the mirana )

I have notice no change in my periods - onto my second one now as i had to have the first one removed for a proceedure. other than a small amount of cramping, and occasionally some bad period pain (nohting panadol cant fix) its fine.

its good because you dont have to remember to take anything, or have regular docs app's. I know your meant to check to see if its still there after your period but i dont bother, i'm on annual smear tests so they check it then

It can make periods heavier, it's not a given though and they dont' know till you have one, also it can be heavy at first then calm down.
I had the copper one, I also can't remember the name of it, put in when my youngest was 10 weeks, but didn't get my period back till he was 9 months (love breastfeeding) and then they were really really heavy, I stuck it out for a year of heavy periods cos I couldn't find a suitable alternative (I also don't want to do hormonal cos of side effects) and was hoping it would calm down and then had it removed cos it was too much to cope with. I think what I had was quite extreme though.
Insertion not so bad, bit crampy and uncomfy, removal easy peasy.

A friend at coffee group had the normal copper one and she's not had any trouble with periods, she's on her second one, she used one between her two children and then had another fitted after and both times no heavy periods. You poor thing, your reaction to progesterone doesnt sound fun at all.

I had the copper coil / IUD inserted when DS was about 8mths old, was kinda like having a smear test with regards to discomfort - took a paracetemol before hand and it was fine, a bit crampy but no big deal. I did bleed quite heavily for a few days to start with but that eased off and then normal cycle resumed but my periods were a good 50% heavier than normal, luckily I dont naturally have overly heavy periods so they were pretty heavy with the coil but not a serious problem. I would have to wear a maxi super tampon and a pad for the first day or so cos I would flood without warning sometimes (not all the time but enough to want to be safe!!) and then a day of maxi super (orange tampax) then the normal super (green tampax) for a day or two. The heavier flow wasnt great but I could live with it. No idea if it affects everyone the same tho.

It was an easy process to have it removed, a quick tug and gone LOL I fell pregnant about two cycles later.

All in all I'd recommend unless you have diabolically heavy periods already (if its an known side effect to increase flow, which I dont know for sure that it is).

Dana you want a plain copper IUD. I have a Mirena that is a hormone based one. And you should join us for our next night out we have.

Hi Ladies,

Been a VERY long time since I've been on.

Can anyone tell me if there is an existing thread on IUD's? Searched and couldn't find one.

I can't take anything with Progesterone after having DD (M is 20 months old now!!!!!). If I do, my skin looks like I've had a chemical burn (no exaggeration) and takes weeks to clear after stopping the pill, PMS is awful and worst of all, it kicks in my PND (off meds now and coping fine). Progesterone makes me crash badly. I've tried four different pills plus Depo and have all had the same result. Doc has advised to stay away from hormonal contraceptives to avoid any further mood disorders.

Looking for feedback on effectiveness, problems, info on effecting periods etc on a NON hormonal IUD.
