Author: Maya
Subject: 3615
Posted: 30 August 2006 at 1:37pm

As far as I know, your child cannot be excluded from school if they have not been immunised, not sure if the same applies to kindergartens. You do have to provide a copy of their immunisation certificate either way so that if there is an outbreak of disease they are aware of which children are not immunised and can contact the parents accordingly. Furthermore, they are not legally allowed to question your decision not to immunise your child, and you are not obliged to tell them why you chose not to.

With the autism thing, it sounds like your friend's little man has had a pretty rough time! There was some suggestion that autism is linked to immunisation, and some websites still advocate this information, but subsequent in-depth studies have shown no link at all. The common factor is the age at which the immunisations are given - it is around the same age that things like brain damage, autism etc. also begin to present themselves, but general medical opinion at the current time is that this is simply a coincidence.

Not trying to change anyones mind or anything like that, its just that I wrote the OHbaby! immunisation pages with help from IMAC and that's what I learnt along the way.

He managed to crack his splint it is now believed he had a sezure (doc will not say that it was the jab's) he then at 10 week's old was confirmed to be legally blind. Anyway long story short is eye's are inproving he still has light sezure's and had to wear sun glasses prety muxh all the time, but he is now dignosed(SP?) with Autisum(SP?). As I said none of the droctor's will say that it was to do with the jab's, but it must be more then a coincident(SP?)
That all said I have not made a choice I was just really interested in what you guy's think.
What I want to know is is it hard to get into kindy etc if they have not had the jab's.

Plus, if there is any way at all I can protect my baby from such a nasty disease, even if it is only effective in some cases then it's worth it.

Maya had a nasty reaction to her 15 mth MMR due to her egg allergy, but I will still give her the 4 year one, only we will have to have it done at Starship. IMO the reaction, scary as it was (she blew up like a balloon and needed adrenalin) only lasted a few minutes, diseases like measles can kill or maim.

That said, it is a personal choice and far be it from me to criticise anyone else for making a different decision.

When I first got asked about it by my midwife I said "ofcourse" but then she asked me what I had read about it... I said nothing just seen the adverts. Later it dawned on me that the campaigns were designed to convince me that it was the right thing to do (which is may be - I dont know) but I realised I hadnt really looked into it myself. Now it seems that the more I read, the more I really think that both sides have valid points, and in the end I know that whatever I decide there will be a little bit of doubt there but hey - I have to make a decision....
tough topic and I think everyone should make the decision based on whats right for them...

I was a little iffy about the menzb. Lissy had them but i put off Jayde until she was 15months. My main reason was because the menz B hasnt been around that long. And was unsure about any possible side effects that may crop up a few years down the track. but DH and i discussed it at length and decided that we would both feel to guilty if the kids contracted something that we immunise against.

But I am so for informed choice and each to their own. In the end we all do what we personally think is best for our kids.

To get your kids into daycare and school you have to have them jabbed and show the documents to show it has been done. If you haven't had the jabs then have to sign alsorts of papers to say why you haven't and that if anyhting happens you take the risk of your child being at the daycare etc. The jabs are free and all you need is time and the pamol for afterwards. I know a lady who suffered from the effects of polio and it is not nice. She is always stared at for walking funny and asked stupid questions. If there is one part of the jab you don't want then you can ask to have it it not in there and get a special jab made up for you.

I feel the very small risk of a bad reaction is far outweighed by the benefits of immunisation. If we didnt immunise the majority of the population, we would still have nasty diseases like polio around. Another thing to consider is most daycares request seeing your immunisation card. And if your child decides to be a medical professional when the are older, they will need to have all the vaccinations then!

I hope you dont mind me asking Deb, but what happened with your friends baby?

And even though people shouldn't say things like that ever, and I would never say things like that ever, unfortunately it happens. She had a normal reaction to her jabs and seems none the wiser - for now. It's a tough decision so good on you girls for speaking about your decision openly.
