Basically you have your hands in a fist and rub up and down on your chest.         Does that make sense?

Jules I have the baby sign book now, but before I actually got it I would just think of words/activities I used all the time and looked them up on YouTube.

Ones we use mostly at the moment are:

Bath, Eat, Milk, Thankyou, Up, Down, Dog

 

ETA - you can make up your own signs for things, so long as you are consistent with them and they make sense for what you are talking about.

Update!

Lily knows milk "milkie", hello/byebye, come here and eat!

I was quite surprised how quick she picked them up - 2-3 weeks. Although at first she confused hello/byebye and milkie up but she's learned to wave her hand properly and knows the difference between milkie now. I have recently started this.

We use milk, up, eat, bath so far. DS has started signing milk, but he at this stage he is just doing it randomly, although everytime he does it I offer him my breast so it should stick soon enough.

I did babysign with DD for months and months and months and she just looked at me blankly. Then one day when she was about 14 months we were out and she did every sign she knew repeatedly accompanied saying by each word. Little monkey knew them all along I think but was waiting till she could say the words She used her signs for about 6 months after that and then they gradually faded away as she got better at talking. She still does all gone and bye bye but thats it now. LMAO...it's one of the few signs she learnt and bothered to remember...and every single day she does her 'milkies' sign!   We started about 8/9 months I think adn boy the milkies one didn't take long hehe but she doesn't really do many others, except butterfly, poos (lol), byebye etc. But she's talking now too so am trying to reiterate things like 'more', 'food' or 'drink' (not breastmilk, water).

i love baby sign, I use it with the children at work, Nic its not too late to start, i've found many of them dont start signing back until after 1yr old. (this could just be that they get it at daycare and not at home)

It seems to really help with frustrations that come with toddlers and lack of language, it prevents tantrums if they have a way of communicating.

Start with a few, google them, or make up your own. just make sure every time you do the sign you say the word, and never force baby to sign by withholding food until he says more etc

I LOVE baby sign language. Jude is awesome with his signs - I'm very proud

He picked up "finished" first, followed by milk a wee bit later I think. Now he has heaps of them.....

We have the book Baby Sign Language by Alison Mackonochie

It's pretty good. There are perhaps better ones out there but it suits our needs just fine. TradeMe have a good cheapish selection of books.

Hi,
I did it with DS1. Did a course at the Parenting Place in Aucks.

But you don't need to do that, just google baby sign and there are websites with videos that show you the signs.

Basically you start with signs that the baby is motivated to learn, so just milk, food and more (if memory serves). You can start from about 6 months but took my boy ages to start signing back, altho my friend's girl picked it up pretty quick. So just start doing the sign every time you feed (milk or food) and one day you'll realise that they understand yay! Then one day they'll do it back! Don't teach any more signs till you think they understand the milk and food one.

I got a babysigns book - just looked n their website and you can get a free poster here

I'm not sure how much is on the poster but tbh I haven't used the book a huge amount. We mainly use signs for things he needs to tell us - eat, drink, sleep, cuddly, help, down, more, etc. And we just made some up - eg for cuddly (his special blankie). I don't have alot of time to look up books or search internet. Can anyone recommend a very short simple book with the signs in.

Just a poster with the signs on would be good can you buy anything like that?
