I was induced though (just with the gel) as water broke and contractions hadn't started by themselves. Once labour was established (6hrs after gel administered) it was a straighforward 3.5hr labour so it does work for some, although my body must have been ready seeing as water had already broken on it's own.

My OB had also told me I would be induced after 10days overdue, but obviously didn't come to that...

For this pregnancy I have a midwife who is very into doing things the natural way. We haven't talked about going overdue yet obviously but I am pretty sure she won't be pushing for an early induction at all.

I was really lucky, very straightforward, quick labour.
The previous week I had taken the homeopathic induction pills 3 times(did nothing), had accupressure (had contractions but that's about all), danced vigorously around the house to very loud 80s/90s music (hehe), tried all the old wives tales (except castor oil and curry!). I did take 5W from 35 weeks and was a regular drinker of raspberry leaf tea and I do believe these helped my body prepare for birth and recovery. I think the baby will come when it;'s ready (unfortunately for those of us having to wait!) and if my waters hadn't have been leaking I probably would have ended up waiting at least another week. I was told that inductions when overdue at our hospital had to be approved by the specialist on duty.

I hate that some hospitals have ridiculous protocols like this. And worse that they are often followed..Provided theres no medical need to induce I don't believe they should be so pushy especially in our hormone enraged but vulnerable states!! Flissty pretty well summed it up though. Most MW's are happy for us to go postdates, with regular checkups.

And on that front I had MW appt just before, and I'll be having my next appt (Fri) at the birthing unit so we can have a quick listen to what bubi is upto in there. As for the natural indutions methods and stuff, I've just started on EPO, 3 a day, one internally. I sit on the fence here, There's no great evidence to suggest there effectivity but hey, why not give it a go!

Bizzy, Hmm I wonder about that in people. My Mum and older sis have had inductions with there 5 kiddies, and I had an induction with my first..So thats 6 inductions due to postdates..Possibly a female thing..? But I'm happy to blame it on DF LOL!

With Madison I was 41+6 and Induced. Luckily it was a relativey swift labour considering a bishop score of a big fat 0. (7hrs all up)

Hila, OMG don't tell your DH that!! Or any men in general

Tried a few tricks in the book but honestly, I reckon they just come when they are ready.

Sucked waiting for this little boy as I had to go stay in this town where the best place to stay was a cabin in a camp ground....and I had to go there 2 weeks before but have to admit that we only went the week before I was due. The temperatures over here were horrendous so wasn't even like we could sit outside with a beer (kidding about the beer bit) and the best thing to do everyday was go to the nearest shopping centre where the only place worth looking in was Big W. haha....am sure the check out people must have recognised me by sight....Oh yeah did I mention that this was over the Xmas/New Years period...I was feeling pretty sorry for myself before we even went, and had a few cries when at Xmas time we drove past people having a nice christmas and we didn't have anything nice...think we had baked beans on toast or something lol (there was not really a kitchen, just a microwave and toaster).

Man, I feel sorry for anyone going overdue...it sucks haha!

In my local hospital (Waitakere), they won't induce you *before* you're 13 days over! Main reasons are that most women will deliver before then and it reduces the rates of intervention that flow from a "failed induction". Your birth sounds similar to mine. There is a very slight increased risk of stillbirth as you go over 42 weeks - emphasis on SLIGHT and I don't know the research well. It's why I would want to be monitored so any problems (e.g. placental deterioration, low amniotic fluid) can be picked up on. My MW is happy for me to go past 42 weeks IF everything is going well and that's what I'll do if I need to.

Like Deb, I think I probably just brew longer - my mother and sisters do, so ...... (Though it's interesting about it being the man's fault - I keep trying to tell my DH that it's all his fault!)

I have such a giant belly, and feel rather unsexy that it is just a bit awkward and funny. I have heard that oral sex works better anyway, as your body absorbs the prostaglandins better that way. Haven't told DH that yet, as he will probably be extra willing to help out as many times as is necessary!!

I do know the baby will come in its own time etc BUT I would like a VBAC, and if I go more than one week over I will need a c-section again, which is the only reason I am going to such lengths.

None of my babies came before 42 weeks and were all forcibly evicted after that date too. I think toby was my longest at 42 + 3. eden - my last - i tried to hold out but being in the vulnerable state of pregnant and overdue it was really hard to not be forced into induction. I should have stuck to my guns on that one cause eden was born by emergency c section in the end after too much intervention.

funnily enough i took EPO most of my pregnancy with gabriel and it didnt help, sex didnt either - it was just very uncomfortable and almost funny!

i have a farmer friend who says that with cows it is the male that determines if it will be overdue or not, so i blame my husband entirely!

After being induced with DS, I really pushed to go a bit longer the second time around. I planned with my MW that I would have a monitor on at a week over to check up on the baby and then a scan at 10 days to really check. I felt this was a the responsible way to go over - once I had these two things confirmed, then I was happy to wait...

At my scan at 41+3 with my daughter they discovered that my waters were quite low and so I was induced the next day.

But I am one of the few that inducement agreed with, I don't know any other way and really enjoyed knnowing that my baby would be here soon and that I was already in hospital!
