Author: weeheebaby
Subject: 36356
Posted: 23 November 2010 at 8:59pm

THought I should pop back and update this.

Things have undergone massive changes at Hutt hospital in the last couple of months (new obstetric staff). It was great. I primarily saw an attending (who's very near the end of ther time - i think) and she was really positive about VBACing. Of course she had to go through all of the "medical risks" of VBACing (but you would expect that of any medical professional). Had a check of my previous scar, talked about what led to my last c-section. And what was really good is she brought the portable scanner in to check bubs' postiion (just to make sure head down). Even better was that she had to get her "boss" to come "sign off" on the scan and he was SUPER AMAZINGLY supportive of VBACing.

ANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNDDDDDDDDDDDDD they didn't even book me in for a c-section (this is what i most was afraid of). The OB said I'm happy for you to go 7 - 10 days over before we do a section. So the upshot is that I have a follow up appointment (only) for 41 weeks to discuss what we will do next. Exciting and daunting at the same time. I love all the new things they are doing at Hutt to encourage women to birth naturally.

Edited by weeheebaby

(can't remember the rest!) saying VBA2C is perfectly safe.

They're medical staff. In their eyes you're a patient. In your midwife's eyes you're a mother. Remember that :o) Stick with your midwife, if you trust her with your life then take deep breaths, remember thousands of women VBAC safely every year! I always felt completely disempowered after every hosp appt and then I'd see my midwife, she'd put my mind at ease or God would send someone my way (like a random on a bus) who'd birthed a 10-lb-er after having a previous caesar.

And we're gunning for ya!

I cried the whole way home (this is probably more to do with all the crazy preg homones), I just felt upset that my DH had taken to heart everything the OB said. And the OB really made me doubt what I am planning on doing. I was feeling so positive about the birth before hand.

I am starting to feel better. I will get DH to meet with midwife this Friday and we will go over the plan of what will happen if things don't go smoothly.

Also the OB said "many women, understandably, choose an elective after having a prior c-section". This really annoyed me. So I asked what her opinion was of home birth for a women who hadn't had a previous c-section. She didn't approve of that either.

Did not go well at all.

Went in and she asked what my plans were for the birth, so I said I was thinking about a home birth. she just stared at me.
I said I had done my research and she started pulling out her stats: 1 in 2000 chance of rupture, and of those that do rupture she said 1 in 200 chance of a still birth and 1 in 100 chance of hysterectomy.
I said I thought they were pretty low risks and she told me they were very real risks.
Her recommendation was for a hospital birth with continuous monitering and an IV line in place. I told her no way. She said if I really insisted that I could come in and have the baby in hospital without the intervention. I asked what about a waterbirth and she just looked at me again. But I took DH with me and now he is scared of a home birth. Now I feel really upset and wish I didn't go.

He asked how the pregnancy had gone and if there were any complications or risk factors he didn't know about, and when I said the pregnancy had been great with no issues, pronounced me young and healthy and said he saw no reason why I wouldn't be able to birth this baby naturally.

I had been dreading it a little TBH and was all ready to go in guns blazing but it was actually a very pleasant and empowering meeting
