ATM, I'm just going with what she wants and re formula - I have tried her on a bottle and she can take it although out of the recommended 200ml she only drinks about 60-80mls and is full so not looking at switching. She is dropping feeds though because until recently we were feeding every 2 hours!

TBH I won't be looking at switching simply because at 1yr she can have cows milk and I plan to BF past 1 year, even if she just has it for night times or in the morning or weekends while I work or study during the day.

You do kinda get a feeling after a while when they want to drop a feed. You'll know if they are hungry and they might want a feed one day and not the next.

HippyMama, there's no pressing need to wean, although I will need to go back to work (fulltime unfortunately) in January so thought I better start thinking about it... Also, she's really lost interest in the daytime feeds - I occassionally forget to give them and she never "reminds" me! So I thought it best to think about supplementing them...
So it sounds like I could cut back to three feeds and swap the arvo one to water and a snack? That would be great, and would avoid giving formula.

If you delayed cutting back a little longer she might drop a feed on her own, but would also be closer in three months time to being able to have straight cows milk as a drink (and avoiding formula altogether).

The number of feeds they have in a day at that age varies hugely, it sounds like your girl is truly normal in terms of how often she breastfeeds. My DD2 at 15 months is still having 3-4 feeds a day, but will also drink water and milk from a sippy cup if she chooses, she also eats like a horse - at times she eats more than her 4yo sister!

Then by 9 months were doing 4 BF's a day like you are now.

You could drop down to 3 BF's a day and offer water as well. You will need to up her solids intake in the afternoon as she wont last all afternoon with no milk or food. I personally wouldnt offer formula if there isnt a real need for it.

My girl is nearly 9 months. She's been exclusively breast fed but is now really into solids (3 meals a day) so I'm thinking of starting the weaning process. She's breastfed at about 7am, 12noon, 3pm and 6.30pm. The morning and night one still seem crucial but the I'm thinking it might be okay to switch the lunch and arvo ones to formula. I was just going to start with the arvo one and then do the lunch one couple of weeks later but it just occurred to me that she might not need both at her age. Could I just go 3 feeds a day with water in the arvo?

Thanks for your help.
