I had a woolen blanket (like the fire blankets (thickness) rather than a fluffy underlay (iygwim) and it worked great for spills (pee/poo/vomit/etc)

eta: It's much better than the plastic mattress protectors, they don't breathe and I remember having to sleep on one in hosp and I just over heated and sweated! As did DD when she had one in the hosp cot.

Thats what I did as well. have used it with both kids and its been great.

Probably not necessary to have a woollen underlay, but I managed to get a woollen aircell-type blanket cheap off Trademe, and tucked that in under the cot bedding. I'm wondering if I should get a woollen underlay for the cot mattress? Just not sure if it is a good idea or a no-no.
