I think the $40 ones are the ones you climb over... ?
The $80 ones are the gates that open. I think. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Have a look in the warehouse and they have them there for around $30 - $40 if anyone looking for them....the baby stores are always more expensive but the warehouse ones are just as good. We have one already to keep the dogs out and it has lasted us nearly eight years now! Also a lot of second hand places have them if you need more than one set. In scheme of all things baby this is a small cost. The gate that we built was by far the cheapest and is the most effective. It doesn't look too flash - being MDF - however if you have lots of areas to guard, then a couple of hinges, some MDF and a latch is a cheap and safe alternative. It's also good because unlike our expensive manufactured gates with bars, Andrew can't see through it and therefore doesn't throw his toys through the holes to the other side. we were interested as we have four sets of stairs that need definitely gates and others that would be a safe option, not everyone's circumstances are the same and every little bit helps at this time,

We have four sets of them and they were around $80 a set... and then we also had to construct a special gate for the stairs because of the width and shape of our stairwell. This is probably a big red herring but my husband heard from a "bloke in the pub" that if you write to ACC they will either provide or give a grant towards stair gates. Living in a house on many split levels this is somethng we will be thnking of in the next 12 months, but before I make a prat of myself with ACC I thought I would check out if anyone else had heard this and not just two blokes in the pub.
