DS is in a group for swimming, but his first couple of lessons were one on one because we were waiting for the group to fill up. I also used to be a swimming instructor, I taught babies right up to competitive swimmers (school aged ones at least!).

Private lessons are definitely very good but I personally would only recommend that you go to the extra expense if your child is a bit behind for their age and needs a few private lessons to catch up. This isn't going to be the case for a pre-schooler, unless perhaps they have a fear of water but even then, as others have said, they are better to be in a group where they can see other kids putting their head under etc.

Group lessons are great fun and no less beneficial. For pre-schoolers I wouldn't want to teach more than 4 or 5 per class so 3-4 sounds perfect.

i was a learn-to-swim teacher through a school before DS. (but did private groups on weekends aswell) and i honestly think that kids respond better in a group. had quite a few one-on-ones and they were more inclined to 'muck around' because there was no real break (iygwim?) with babies, I also think that the mums do better in a group. especially if you all have to dunk your babies, at least your not the only one! would always recommend a group. then the babies can see other babies too.

I have taught swimming and also now have Jackson in swimming lessons.

From a teaching perspective IMO groups are better for general swimming and water safety. Its a fun and encouraging environment.
Private/individual lessons IMO are more if you want to focus on specific things or need stroke improvements or if there is fear of water etc.

From a mummy perspective, I prefer the group sessions (ours are 3 max). Not only is it fun, he is learning to interact with others in an environment other than DC.

depends on the teachers and your child but i'd be inclined to say the group just because (for some kids) if they see other kids putting their head under/letting go of the flutterboard etc they will get the confidence to do it as well.
