Author: BayGirl
Subject: 36689
Posted: 29 November 2010 at 2:06pm

My girl has never had a routine. I don't do eat play sleep either. She feeds as she needs to.

Only now (nearly 5 months ) is she settling into consistant day naps. So we have an 1 and half hour nap in morning and 2 hour nap in afternoon. But every day is different when she has these naps sometimes first is at 9.30 am other days not till 11am.

The only thing i can suggest is try really hard to recognise babies tired signs. if you can get sleep right everything else will fall into place. But i really would suggest that you leave it till at least 3 months to worry about esstablishing patterns. Your wee one will do what they need to at this age, just follow their clues.

And my bit of advice for once your bub is older and you are establishiing routines. To start with spend a few weeks at home not going out to town or out to friends excessively (ie every day). To set up routines stay at home and have a consistant preparation for nap time routine. Ie We go to room have a cuddle and a story book (or two). Quiet time (5 mins or so) and then i song and cuddle standing by the cot. Then into cot and another song. Then i leave her to self settle. Going in and out to help as need be.

I made the mistake (with the warmer waether) of going out lots to town and shops and friends in teh last few weeks,. DD was getting very unsettled and cranky so i have speent 1 week staying at home with her (just going out for walks with stroller). She has settled down considerably into some forms of patterns now.

With babies they are forever changing. The have growth spurts, teething, jabs, needing solids, too hot weather, too cold weather that will all affect how they settle and how they act. It is best to just follow your bubs cues to see what they need ratehr than expect them to be the same every day.

So around this time I started watching more for sleep signs and watched the clock a bit more and if she started to grizzle around the right time she got put to bed and then she tended to slide into a bit more of a routine. BUT I warn you. Every time you get used to what he's doing expect the little monkey to change something. I don't know that we've had anything longer than 3 weeks before our daughter changed things. I think we got better at better at reading her signals though so I haven't found it as stressful as I thought I would. Oh and there will be growth spurts where you sit for HOURS doing nothing but feeding.
