I work as an Elf at the mall *(taking photo's of the kids with Santa) and I'm all for letting the kids imagine that he's real and experiencing the magic of it. In saying this though, I have seen some really horrible parents who, even though thier kids were terrified of Santa, still made them go up and see him/sit with him.. I think the idea is magical but maybe in person, some of the magic is lost. When I was a kid, I swore that I saw santa in his sleigh fly over our house once christmas eve lol, I can still see what I saw, in my head. I remember yelling to dad "daddy daddy I saw santa!!!" So dad said, "oh you better go to bed then!!".
I told the kids at school I saw him and they made fun of me and told me santa wasnt real, so I went home crying, and dad had to tell me the truth, I think I was about 9 or 10...not sure though.

My kids can believe for as long as they want to

My childhood memories of xmas & Santa always felt magical & fun & we try & make the same feeling for our kids. I don't know if DS1 still believes & I am sure some kids at school have put him right but he has not said he doesn't believe. I was the youngest in our family & they kept the illusion of Santa till I was old enough to want to stop & that is what we will do.

DH is from Holland so he had Sinterklaas on the 5/12 & we do that for our kids also. So DH did not do xmas like us till he came to NZ.

I love xmas & hope we have Santa for many yrs to come.

It was never a big thing in my family and I don't recall my parents forcing it on me, I think I knew all long he didn't exist but still went to get photos! Never got presents from Santa, just family.

My daughter is starting to not believe in him, although at times (if she thinks it will get her presents ) she says she does.....
I think the idea of Santa is great and hes welcome in our household for many years to come.

A little bit of magic and excitement didn't hurt anyone. My 10 year old has an inkling that he isn't real and after this year in nz I am sure he will be enlightened very fast. His playground education has been staggering over the last year. I also say if you don't beleive you don't receive. With my 13 year old she moved from the excitement of beleiving to the excitement of keeping the secret and helping bring fun to the others. She was 10 when she found out.

As for photos we have a very pervy photo of me and my brother on santas lap with our older sister who would have been 18 and santa getting a good look down her top. I think Santa is harmless fun. Likewise I never got upset when I found out Santa doesn't actually exist (I like the 'you have to believe to receive' line!). My mom always said the if you dont believe you dont recieve thing too, so every year i remind her i still believe and every year i get a santa sack at the end of my bed Still.

Howeeeever, i think i would rather my child know that their uncle brought them a nice toy because his uncle loves him and wants to give him something nice. Its all about giving not recieving and i feel like Santa fosters an attitude of gimme gimme gimme.

I grew up not celebrating xmas (due to parents religion) and DH did. So now we have our boy, we have talked about what to do, but I am anti santa. So I don't think we will tell him about santa. We will celebrate xmas ie gifts etc.
I guess because I never believed/celebrated I don't see what what the big deal is with him. Its kinda weird. "if you don't believe you don't receive"....... I fondly remember mum telling us 4 that as kids.... coming back to haunt her now... 40 years later and we are still all true believers!

And he still comes... :) And mum spends all day on xmas trying to work out who has bought her santa pressie.

We used to have fun leaving reindeer prints and poo on the lawn at the farm for my city cousins.

oh my gosh I love Santa and Christmas lol, I think the whole thing is awesome and completely harmless, it never even crossed my mind to not do it with T. Every year when we were little we always used to put out milk and chocolate chippies (and carrots and lettuce and a bowl of water for the reindeer) and mum or dad would always come and eat it to make it look like Santa had been haha and always left a pressie on the end of the bed, we would always stay up trying to see santa but always fell asleep lol, I never got mad the my mum and dad had 'lied' to us, as we got older we just figured it out. Weird, I was just thinking about this while bringing the washing in!

One of our family member's don't 'encourage' santa because of the whole 'don't talk to strangers' thing and then some parents push their kids on to santa's lap and make them talk to him etc etc , it was also the whole thing about parent's 'lying' to their kids about this fantasy person and then finding out he's not real.

Now I don't entirely agree with not believing in santa because i've never heard of a kid finding out that he isn't real and then turning to his parents and saying 'you lied to me!' but I don't think we'll go overboard with it either with the photo on santa's lap etc etc. As a kid, I loved the mystery and excitement of having santa come down the chimney and eating the milk and bickkies I think it's good for kids' imaginations, I mean it's no different to fairy tales is it?

It really made me think though about whether to go into the whole santa thing with DD when she's older and how far we would go with it. I think it would be sad to cut him out altogether though. My kids still do and I think it is a great bribery tool to get things done!!! I think he is a good thing to still let the kids believe in him althou I think this will be the last year for Andrew.
