My brother used to get croup a lot as a child, he was also asthmatic although not badly.
Mum would take him into the bathroom and run a hot shower to steam it up. They gave him an inhaler a while ago but the problem with it is that it dries his throat out and that makes him worse, poor little man has had everything and has had enough medication going in everywhere and freaks out knowing whats coming ! one of my girls gets it all the time. i ended up having to buy a steam vapourisour. Also have they looked that he hasnt got asthma. oh that sounds awful! you poor thing. mikey had a croupy cough once and even though it wasn't as bad as your son sounds, it was still nasty. i found that taking him in the bath with me with afew drops of lavender oil in it helped. i'm not sure whether it helped his cough or just relaxed him so that he could deal with it a bit better.

Can anyone help me?
My son has suffered from croup on several occasions and I am at a loss with what I should do now....
