If you aren't into too much fancy stuff I lived in Saudi Arabia for a while and learnt how to brew all sorts.

We made potato whiskey, pineapple beer, red and white wine and regular beer. We did it with empty water bottles (the big ones that go on a aqua cooler) and a rubber glove and a rubber band. Ingredients varied but they were basic stuff from the supermarket and our wine made a whopping 4 week vintage before we guzzled it. The last 2 inches in the bottle was sludge though so an expert hand at pouring was needed. lol. DH said you need a still for spirits so can not use the beer brew kit. You can do sider & ginger beer.

MLS, Binn Inn stock a huge range of home brew and spirit stilling stuff. Hi, my hubby makes all his own beer, the kit cost around $100 from "the home brew shop". I bought DH a kit for his birthday this yr & he loves it. He has wanted one for ages. I got it from PnS they are approx $85 at the moment & it has all you need from memory. He has just bottled a brew. It takes a week in the barrel & about 3weeks in bottles. He has it in my hot water cupboard. I am going to get him some beer glasses with his name (xxx's beer & xxx's brew) for xmas well so is the plan

I don't think it is cheaper as you make 30 bottles & we often buy beer also but the big thing is he is very proud of his beer & gets great satisfaction from making it. So my hubby is having his birthday on Christmas Day and I'm toying with a few ideas for gifts for him.

He loves beer, but due to budgetary commitments he goes without quite often (his choice). he's a winemaker so I figure beer brewing would probably be right up his alley.

Do you, or partners/family/friends brew your own?

What am I looking at for a basic start-up kit?
Is it worth the effort and is it as cost effective as "they" say?
