My Mum also had cervical cancer and had a full hysterectomy at 35 so I'm another one who is very pro smear testing. For Mum if she hadn't had regular smears it might not have been picked up until too late.

Yep, they aren't exactly a barrel off laughs, but probably nowhere near as bad as you are imagining.

The last couple of times, I've actually had mine done by a nurse at the doctor's office. I hate getting them done and always put it off but then this is how my sisters cancer was picked up early both times! So now because of a family history including my mum and nana its recommended that i get them done more often than normal and as much as i dont like it I know its soooo important. Go get one - for the 10 minutes it can take - it puts you rmind at rest or can save your life by detecting it early. Its more uncomfortable that hurt but I do have a friend whom it hurts alot - something to do with her cervix being 'different'. My first ever smear test at 18 ended in surgery, this nearly scared me off having them for life! But everytime I have one (I have to have them yearly) I remember that I'm doing it for my baby and future babies. My last one I did while lying on my side (I hate looking people in the face while they look in your moot!) and it look 1 minute for her to get her crap ready, do it, then move out of the way. I think they are very essiential. I have had problems with my cerix and the only way it was picked up was from the smear. They don't hurt and are a tad uncomfortable but they are the only way to see whats happening with your cervix. Mmmm well I don't know if it absolutely essential, but I'm one of those people who thinks it is quite important. A couple of my friends have had abnormal smears lately at such a young age. And while it might be nothing, there is also the possibility it is something, and if they catch it early there is a much better chance of fixing things!

It isn't exactly pleasant, but if you get a doc you are comfortable with then it is so much easier... and it is over pretty damn quick - then you don't have to worry about it for another couple of years!
