I usually get really stressed out as they do things so differently to me and it drives me nuts. I have finally, after about 14yrs , learnt to relax and not worry about things that don't matter too much like cups being left in the sink etc. So that would be my advice, try and relax, plus I am sure they don't need waiting on

Also maybe you could go to them every 2nd visit, you could head there during baby's first nap and head home after dinner. That way you can get there and back in a day and not have them to stay

Because I know our weekends get booked out pretty fast and it's often hard to find time for just us as a family when there are a lot of other commitments, and a weeknight might be easier (or maybe not - but just pick the time that's best for you!)
Maybe don't stress too much when they do want to come and visit. They probably don't need to be waited on as such, and might even be keen to help out by preparing a meal, or looking after your baby for a couple of hours while you have some "me" time. (I know both my mum and MIL love to get their hands on DS whenever they can, and don't mind taking over and giving me a break!)
Also, is there someone else close by they could stay with? My IL's live out of town and are here about once a month or so, but they don't stay with us coz our house is way too small. But they still get to see DS and have some quality time with him when they're here. In saying that, they used to live here, so they have lots of friends and other family to stay with.

    Author: newmumandlovingit77
Subject: 37017
Posted: 08 December 2010 at 11:00am

Hi all, my baby girl is 4 months old and I am loving being a Mum! However I sense a potential problem on the horizon next year and wanted to get some other views. My Mother In Law and her partner live 2 hours away, and she retires next year so is excited about coming to see our little girl more. That is all well and good but I am unsure (and a little nervous!) as to how often they will want to come, and I think they will want to stay over each time they come (they are getting older so it's too far to go in a day).

As my husbands parents are split up, we also have his fathers visits to manage as well (him and his partner live 3 hours away), plus my parents, who live close so can pop over for an hour or so at a time. I have never been really big on having people to stay, and find it doubly hard with a baby as I really value our family space and also time to do my own thing, rather than constantly preparing for, and looking after guests. I know I need to be a little flexible on this as the parents in law want to be part of our girls life too.

Wondering if others have similar situations and how often they find it works for the parents in law to stay over?? I'm thinking a night every 3-4 weeks is enough for us to handle, with day visits as often as they want, but am I being too miserly maybe?!

Hope to hear others thoughts!!

Edited by newmumandlovingit77
