hahaha your 70yr old Grandad Mummyfreckle! DP's mum is a bit like that when texting too - but she makes up all kinds of abbreviations to make shorter texts - sometimes they are a real challenge to make out.

I also can't stand seeing my teenage cousins write like this on facebook - I just assume they are all too dumb to know how to write properly! I've never been so stunned as when one cousin said she had passed NCEA English (even said passed, not past (but she didn't capitalise the E!) Everything else she has ever written has every spelling and grammatical error possible!

Man, when i went to school (back in the day, when kids listened to their elders ) you lost a half mark for every word spelt incorrectly in an exam, even if the exam wasnt in english!

haha. i'm a teacher too, and I would hand it back and say "no".   My students all know my aversion to text speak. And they know that I wouldn't mark it. At one place I worked, any CV's which came in with that sort of wording, or 'inappropriate' email addresses (eg sexprincess69@hotmail.com) were chucked straight away - even if they had great qualifications etc

Oh gosh yes, I hate text speech with a passion. (I'm such a geek I even use punctuation marks in my texts.) Funnily enough, my brother and DH are both the same, but my mum uses text speech when she texts, although not as much as she used to, since she gets grammatically correct sentences in return.

As a university lecturer, I've never had a complete assignment submitted in text speech, but I do regularly get reports with poor grammar, 'u' instead of 'you' and other issues. Text speak when typing on a keyboard drives me nutty too, its no faster typing words in full (ok, with the odd spelling mistake, some of us ARE only human hehe) than it is to type out in text speak. I can kind of understand using text speak when its just letters removed to shorten words as there IS a limit to # of characters per text, but letter replacement doesnt make sense! I hate it too! I hate lingo that is about at the mo its so freaking annoying. DP does EvErY sEcOnD lEtTeR thing when he's doing a nickname on facebook or things like that it pisses me off! I don't have the patience.

I don't have the best spelling but sure as hell don't type like that.

OH and when people type like fobs, purposely typing things like pest instead of best. GGGGGAAAAHHHHH!

ARGH! That totally did my head in reading that- it's also one of my big big pet hates! Especially when they use the same amount of letters! I can understand abbreviating in texts, but on FB?

Matt: it took me about 2 hours 2.5 hours to cln a 1.5t diggr 2day...y do people return a diggr widout evn tryg 2 clean it...lol...bt algud, i mst say it woz a gd dy at wk this avo...:D

I just don't think there's any excuse for it.
We all went/go to school and all learn English.
I have several people in my life who have learnt English as a second (and, in one case, third) language, and their grammar is impeccable.
They've learnt the same syllabus/curriculum that we were all taught, so how do Kiwis let their standards fall by the way-side?

It's SUCH a pet hate of mine!!

(I also think there's no excuse for using contractions incorrectly, but that's a whole other discussion )

Hahaha it's so annoying! I had a friend a few years ago who used to write me emails like that - they took so long to read I eventually asked her to write in normal English so I could understand her (she doesn't write to me anymore ). And I have a couple of young family members on FB who post updates like that too, I don't bother reading them.

Ahh yes, this is one of my pet hates, I just don't get it. Especially when like Kelly described they make the word longer or equal in length but replace as many letters as possible, its just crazy.
I've even seen it on facebook and in txts from people who I thought were intelligent and well educated.

I wonder what hope our children have if they are concentrating on writing the "wrong" way. It drives me nuts too. Its the new In thing. I wonder how long it will take until no one remembers the correct way to spell things........not to mention how random the words are to describe

I have also wondered about the people that spend all that time pressing Caps on and off to gEt tHaT eFfEct.......(those three words too me ages to just type)

My grandfather (in his 70s) has started texting like this, because his young granddaughters (13) have taught him to text....it drives me mental!

But i was just bitching about this the other day, my friend wrote her status as "libz b in twn an owt trippn hard yea boi!" and my head nearly exploded. (shes 24 and i know she went to school because we were in the same classes!)

The effort it takes to write like that blows me away.

Especially when they write things like "wednesdae" what is the point in that?? it doesn't take any letters away, it doesn't save any time.
