I forgot to take my ranitidine this mornign I forgot how bad it was (work day today so was stuck at work without it). Had such bad heartburn/reflux all day. My mum gave me some good advice too :D Dont drink anything while you are having a meal, and dont lie down within half an hour of your meal. I get terrible terrible heartburn, to the point where I am sick now, and just throw up stomach acid. Nothing at all worked (gaviscon, milk, apples etc) and would be set off by ANYTHING. Mum got me some titralac yesterday and its a god send! Went to the Dr today I'm starting randitadine tomorrow
Can't remember if she called it class or type, but
gaviscon/quickeze etc are class A - all good for pregnant woman studies done etc.
randitadine is class B1 - ok for pregnant woman 2nd trimester + only, limited studies

Hey IsaacsMum, I have a raw sore throat. Kinda feels like someone has quite literally poured acid down it. A constant dry cough. Painful swallowing. But mainly, when gp went to look at my throat with his instrument thing he could see ulceration right at the back just before it dissapeared lower. Assumes I have more along the oesophagus but won't do the camera-throat thing at this point. Got to put up with it until birth then if it doesn't improve I'll get camera'd. :/ Ick.

Also been put on Rivacol mouth wash to use after each time I bring up acid to try protect my teeth.

My glands are swollen on either side of my throat.

My indigestion started getting really bad about 2 weeks ago. I started getting a cough about 1 week ago. The cough is getting worse and I'm wondering if they're related. Pantoprazole is also called somac

This type of medication does pass to the baby and the through breastmilk, but studies have not specifically been done to identify issues in pregnancy or in children under 12

They do significantly reduce the symptoms of too much stomach acid - which isnt always a good thing - as it can occasionally be masking a deeper issue

There is a department that investigates adverse reactions for all medicines - so the reason these are still deemed safe would be because they have no reports to cause serious concern in a particular group - such as pregnant woman

If you can get away with just taking titralac and gavison etc - then do so - but if you cant these are great!!!

I have found with each pregnancy a different thing worked

Yup, omeprazole is losec. pantoprezole is prescription only and doesn't seem to have a common name. But it's a stronger acting proton pump inhibitor. Not as safe in pregnancy but doc was happy as I'm far enough along that bubs is just getting bigger, not really developing any more. Makes me feel bad for taking it but I felt like I was losing the plot after nights of no sleep and sitting upright with feet on the floor. Couldn't even sit up in bed.

Quickeeze aren't working for me this time either, it's fine while it's in my mouth but as soon as it's gone the heartburn is back two more weeks till my next MW appointment

Rachelsea I didn't know for my first pregnancy and suffered through it, slept sitting up etc...so awful! I have the same midwife so I'm not sure why she suggested it this time when she didn't last time - maybe I didn't complain about it enough last time lol. Anyway it's just a tablet you take twice a day and then you just don't get heartburn anymore! I took rantidine and wouldn't hesitate to take it again...it was worth it for the sleep. I too would be interested in reasons for not taking it?

Just curious. I've recommended (on here and IRL) medication for heartburn/indigestion. But it seems lots of people are reluctant to go that route. Can anyone explain to me why? I've read that losec isn't known to be 100% safe and probably wouldn't take that myself, but everything I've read about ranitidine says it's safe. Is it just not wanting to take meds to be extra safe or is there something I'm missing??
I am on ranitidine now and it's absolutely amazing for preventing heartburn, and I did a lot of reading (on the net) and talking to midwife about it before going on it, but if there's a safety issue that I'm missing I want to know!
