Someone told Mum to put a sticking plaster over our bellybutton, and weirdly, it worked, so much so that the teacher/bus driver would check to see if we had them on our tummies before we went on a long trip, once we learnt that sticking plaster trick we were sick no more. Hmm in our heads Im thinking now, but hey anything is worth a try
Oh and sprinkle baking soda over the seats/ carpet etc leave as long as you can then vaccumme up, helps get rid of the smell too

It seems to occur when what you see, and what you feel (your balance) don't match.

Try and position your little one (if possible depending on your car seat) so that he can see the road ahead, so he knows what it coming, make sure you (or your husband) drive quietly around corners (sharp cornering is the worst), and try and keep fresh air blowing on his face - the smell of vomit often makes more vomit likely!

We travel with a kids beach bucket lined with a plastic bag. But since we started this trick we haven't had to use it.

Get them to hold a lemon and focus on it. Not sure why but it honestly works. They hold the lemon the whole way and on the windy bits we make them focus on it. My son has thrown up everytime going thru the karagahake gourge and the L n P bottle at Paeroa has seen more of his vomit that it really should. We live on one side and my sister on the other so it is a frequent trip. Since the lemon trick we haven't had one spew.

Hope this helps.

I lined under thier seats with old towels and a rubbish bag under that so it didn't get through the seat cos once it does its very hard to get rid of the smell, also had one on the floor in front of her and sort of tied one round her like a bib as well. In the boot I carried a bucket, some empty 2l containers with disinfectant water, rags and some oust fabric spray as well as wet facecloths in bags and nappy wipes and towels. Also some old plastic bags and a rubbish bag to carry them home in (I hate the smell it makes me feel even sicker so go overborad to avoid it).
I don't feed her immediately before a trip but find if she has a good breakfast at LEAST an hour before going it stays put. No yoghurt or milk to drink either. She has cold water in a bottle and I try to encourage her to have a sleep. She is now big enough and uses and icecream container so no need for all the towels etc, but I still prepare with my sick kit in the back.
For myself I prefer to drive, but husband not keen so on long trips when I feel dodgy I turn air con up full blast on my face and concentrate on singing to take my mind off it, I find closing my eyes and listening to my ipod concentrating hard on music helps heaps, although it is very antisocial, lol.

As a kid I was on the sea legs pills, but I was always on a higher dose so after a while I think I got immune. But they worked really.

Ginger beer (pref flat) works really well but they need to drink it quite regularly. Ginger anything is great but you need to eat it every 1/2 hour or so.

As an adult I swear by the blackmores ginger tablets. You have to take them religously so many per hour (or whatever it says on the box) but I have been in 5m swells and not been sick. I usually get sick just waiting for the ferry to undock!!

Books reading is bad, but I've heard a DVD player is better as it forces the kids to look straight ahead.

BUT the best fix (and DH hates this) is the driver, they need to not drive so the kids get sick. I can make myself sick if I drive the wrong way!! DH is finally coming round to this, once me DS and the dog all threw up on the same stretch of road!!! My Auntie tried EVERYTHING to no avail, but got very good at pulling over in time. I hope that's not the case for you (but in case nothing works, thought you might at least like to know that you're not the only one )

Now he's older, one of my cousins finds those magnetic bands very helpful, they pretty much get rid of the problem (he's an ambulance officer, not a good place to get carsick). Worth a shot?

Edited by Hopes
