I had a good day, but it was busy and I let myself get too rundown leading up to Christmas, so had a cranky baby for the next couple of days. We seem to be back on track now.
Went and weighed Anthony at Plunket today and clothed he's now 4.6kg so gaining nicely now - he's almost out of the newborn clothes now. And have just moved him into infant nappies after a few poo incidents over the last week - newborn just couldn't keep it in anymore.
Getting into more of a routine with daylight sleeping now. He's figured out how to hold his fingers in his mouth and since he is quite a sucky baby I wrap him with one arm out so he can suck at his fingers and this seems to work. He still grizzles/cries before falling asleep but there is no force in it, he just fights going to sleep.
Hope everyone has a Happy New Year tomorrow - don't think I will be staying up to see the New Year in.....

What 'hold' do you find works - as in do you mimic a BF hold or do a completely different hold, and do you get your DP to take over or will she only take a bottle from you? I have tried dummies but she uses her tongue to spit these out too, she will sometimes suck if I hold it in with my finger but usually pushes it out after a min or so!

All is good here with Sophie who has settled into a nice routine of 7 hour sleep over night followed up with 2hrs then naps of 2-3 hours during the day.

Mama Tasj - I have started using the bottle on sophie who is the same afge as your bub. I introduce the bottle part way through the feed when she is most content. I also use the Closer to Nature bottles which have been great. She doesn't seem to be as gassy with these. It takes a few goes and often she will give me a foul look when she realises but I just keep persisting. Do you use a dummy? I think this may have helped with our transition.

At the moment he is breast fed but will porbably change to both formula and breast soon as he's not putting on weight and I go back to work part time at the end of January so will make life easier all round, should make at least 3 months. The plunket lady I had problems with earlier has been great over his lack of weight gain and seemed much more helpful, I think she could see I was freaking out a bit between that and at that stage 15 poo free days.
I hope you are all well, take care for the start of 2012!

Poor wee Harry, wow I didn't know babies could go 14 days without pooping, Caelin poops, we wait.... put a new nappy on and right after that she poops some more! It's exhausting! Are you BF Harry or formula?
Yecats - my girl grizzles before sleep, but if she is overtired it's all out screaming. We found that swaddling her, shsshing and holding her firmly to our body while she 'cries it out' helps her to wind down when she is like that (after checking all the obvious possibilities first, of course)
I was having a LOT of trouble getting Caelin to nap during the day and she would get super overtired (is so alert when awake and very chatty) so tried something I read in the OhBaby magazine this issue - swaddle, put baby on the side facing AWAY from you and shh or pat their bottom until they settle, then turn them back onto their backs once they are quiet or semi-asleep. You might have to do this 4 or 5 times going back into the room the first few times but we have been doing it about a week now & find it very effective - usually works in the first 3 times of me going back in to pat her bottom... YAY!

Anyone have any tips for long car drives with a very young baby?! We have to do a 4.5 hour drive to our new digs in a weeks time, wish us luck please!!!

I may have to bring bedtime forward, is so tricky cos dinner and bed all around the same time and his Dad has been working late so haven't wanted to put him to bed without seeing Dad. I guess it isn't much fun for Dad to see screaminng baby when he's had a busy day at work though!!!
We are now up to day 14 and no poo!!! Took him to the dr yesterday, she checked him out and said he is fine, he did do a shart (sh*t loaded fart) yesterday so maybe that counts as poo??? Is so hard to understand that 14 days is OK, I said the books said 7 - 10 days is normal, she said Harry hasn't read the books so therefore doesn't know he should have gone! Imagine what Harry might be giving me for Christmas by then it will be 17 days, imagine the 17 day poosplosion!!!!
Merry Christmas Mum from Harry!!!
Merry Christmas to you all, I hope none of you get the poosplosion I'm expecting!

I have found there is a very fine line between her being ok and being over tired and I really notice the crying to sleep kicks in when she hits that point of over tired. If i dont get her to sleep quickly after that then we have all out screaming and the only thing that settles her is rocking walking swaying and shhhhing all at once lol. A couple of times I have gotten her into bed before the tiredness kicks in and she has chatted to herself for a few mins before falling to sleep.

M is now sleeping thru the night yay, usually goes down for the night about 9pm and then sleeps until 6am except last night when she was woken up by her big bro at 3am so I fed her and she slept until 8am haha DH was nearly late for work because we haven't been setting an alarm because she and DS are pretty reliable alarm clocks... usually.

Merry Christmas everyone and I hope you all enjoy your first xmas with your babies. Congrats Harvie on surviving the wedding. We managed a trip to Taupo & back a couple of weeks ago but it was really hard work.

Trying to get Miss Caelin taking BM from a bottle, after a couple of weeks of trying every few days, today she successfully drank about 40mls with DP from the bottle! Yay!!! We are all moving to Wellington as DP starting Paramedic studies in Feb, so hopefully bottles will make our move a whole lot easier.

Also I just wanted to update on the issue I was having with Caelin a few weeks ago in case anyone else is having similar issues (seemed like stomach issues - screeching & arching back after feeds/while trying to get a poop out) - have discovered after doing some research & trial and error that it was due to a forceful letdown (milk sprays everywhere!) and her getting too much sugary foremilk - am now either pumping some milk off before feeding, or lying back to feed so she has to work against gravity.
A really good website for all sorts of info on sleep/BFing etc IMO is kellymom.com

Hope everyone and their little people are doing well, miss reading everyone's updates!
Went for a long walk and she slept the whole way, but since it was a warm day I came home all sweaty :P

For those struggling with carriers/packs, make sure you keep trying every day or two with your baby but only when they are fed, burped & changed - when theyre in a cuddly mood is best! Then later on when they cry they tend to settle easier as they get used to it I guess.

Also feeling ya on the clothes situation! I shopped at Farmers, opshops & Warehouse and could only find ONE top that looked anywhere near flattering... and it's still not that great... grr! I got a pouch sling for the quickness and easiness but the only time she's happy in it is when I bf her in it. So I have slowly become a wrap expert. She loves it. I only have to lap the house once and she's out even when she's really overtired. It is worth the couple mins crying it takes me to get it on and her in it. My complaints are (still) that mine is very long and wide and that it is so hot! Think I will make like trex and make a lighter one for summer and just put bub in a nappy. DH is going to have to learn how to use it as when I'm not here it will be his best trick to settle her. I think the ring slings look better than the pouch cause you can do tum to tum hold which they prefer to cradle. Let me know how it goes.

Well you can't have everything I guess it just makes for a busy day!

Hope everyone is getting some sleep and all is going well I'm going to go back a few pages now to catch up!

I think maybe you could just try putting her in your wrap whenever you can and if she starts fussing then just try to keep on going with what you're doing and ignore her a little and maybe she will start to settle a bit more.

Off to a 30th tonight so have been expressing a bit during the day today as kids are going to my parents. Because Lara doesn't seem able to stay asleep in her bed at nap time (quite seriously..no one and no technique can get that kid to get into a deep sleep) I want to start wearing her more to avoid her getting overtired. It's just tricky when I need to go somewhere as she is always awake in the car so gets overtired pretty quick. I'm keen to keep getting out and about, esp for the benefit of my 2 year old so I need to work at getting Lara happy with the wrap or Manduca. I just find it is hard to get up and down or bend as she wakes if I do anything like that.

I managed to get her to take a 2 hour nap in bed with me at midday and a 1 hour nap in the manduca this afternoon. I will be interested to see how she goes tonight. Since getting SO overtired each day she's been doing a 7 to 8 hour stretch at night from exhaustion. A huge change from feeding every 2 hours as she was doing a week ago. Since she is not so tired tonight I wonder if she will still do a long stretch..? We will see! I also think she may have had a wee virus so it could be now she is rested and well she goes back to frequent night fees. I certainly hope not

He was in it most of the time when both packing and unpacking. If he is overtired and won't settle it seems to take 1km of walking to get him to sleep, so usually try to walk 2km to get a decent wee sleep before I take him out.
I am lucky though cos he is a milk coma boy and after that I can feed him and generally he will go to sleep. I actually managed a whole day shopping in Queenstown my sister had him in the front pack and we had two 2 and a 1/2 hour stints shopping with a feed in the middle.
We had a rough week last week with a family funeral and him being passed around but seem to be getting back into routine today after a few days at home, we are lucky he is such an adaptable wee boy, can't believe how much has happened since he was born, he had special Nana hugs today which is pretty important for Nana now.
I am lucky my work has offered me one day a week from the start of the new school year and I have had my maternity leave extended till the start of the 2013 school year so have plenty of time to make decisions.
Take care everyone, hope you are getting lots of smiles from your wee bundles!

DD1 drags me out of bed before DD2 in the mornings too. And our sleep is nearly as good as yours overnight.

Fiona, I find one problem with baby wearing is that a baby held against your chest really picks up on your stress, so the more agsty you get about her going to sleep, the less likely it is. I've noticed if i put her in there specifically to get her to sleep it takes ages, but if I put her in there cos I'm busy and need my hands free she nods off easier. What carry do you use in the moby? I find hug hold better than cradle, and I'll often hold the moby over her face/eyes (she can still breathe!) to obscure her view so she gets bored and that speeds up the sleep, especially when she's over tired. I hope you get a break soon

Im doing whats best for my baby the best way I can which is not always the way they like....

As for nights Mason usually settles about 9pm (I wrap him at night). We get a long stretch of sleep about 4 hours then up feeding and change then back down for about 2-3 hours. Am usually up for an hour. Last couple of days he has now been settling back to bed to do a further 2-3 hours, unfortunately DS1 is up by then which is between 6 and 7 so I cant head back to bed as he wont allow me too I tried but got given my dressing gown and told to get up lol

Last midwife appointment next week little bit upsetting but Im sure they will see me again haha

It is another month before Im due back at work but am really considering just staying at home.

Hope all is well with everyone

I can't get LAra to settle in our moby or Manduca but as she doesn't settle anywhere else I am totally stuck. I don't get why she won't be carried as I've heard that all babies are suppose to love it. She seems like a 3 month old, not a 7 month old...so alert and opinionated. She is not at all newborn like. I am at my wits end.

It was kinda upsetting. Onto Plunket next week. My midwife did advise me to ignore their advice if it didn't suit. She's had some problems with Plunket advising things that we contary to what she had set up with her mothers. She's not sure how often they update their research and study...... She said there's good Plunket nurses and not so good ones and just to remember it is only advice, you don't have to do what they say.....

Yes i get the whole thing breast is best but i look at kaylee and i ciouldn't be prouder of how she is developing! if people have an issue with a FF baby, then shame on them. Kaylee is developing the same, if not better than some BF babies. And as for bonding pfft! I have a great bond with Kaylee, as does DP, which i think is great.

Some babies need more sleep than others and maybe she is just one that doesn't need it. But if she is grumpy rather than happy maybe she isn't getting enough from each feed to be contented and needs to be fed like Girls Rock said more regularly. I have Mikayla on a schedule now and during the day make sure she feeds every 3 hours, even if she isn't asking for it yet. We have had 10.30-5.30am sleeps during the night and she is quite happy to lie on her playmat and look around or sleep between feeds.

Off to WINZ tomorrow to see how much money we can get off them to help with the bills while I'm studying
For those that are struggling with sleep at any time, day or night, it is just about the hardest thing about parenting I reckon.
There are so many questions all the time. I was wondering why Luca was pooping so often after not have had a dirty nappy for about 5 days. Now he has a very sore bottom because he poops before and during every feed. I did a little research and have found that is pretty normal. The only thing that could be a problem is that he may be getting too much fore milk and not enough of the fat enriched hind milk.
We have had a couple of great nights with him and touch wood we are in the improve at night.
I went out to a concert with my Mum tonight and left expressed milk for hubby. Apparently Luca did really well, took the bottle well and is currentlu settled in bed. Will be interesting to see how the rest of the night goes!
Good luck with your decision making luv2dance, big decisions!!!
FionaS - Luca is up anywhere from 6.30-8am, no realy pattern yet.

Poor M has a cold which her lovely big brother brought home for her. We had a pretty unsettled night last night because she was coughing and has a blocked nose. She has been asleep on me all morning and I am still in bed in my PJ's and now she is in her bassinet awake but I can hear her snorting and sneezing a lot. Hopefully it clears up quickly. She also hasn't fed very much in the last 24hours because I think of her nose being blocked and maybe just not feeling like it. I have been offering it to her and she has had regular little drinks though which is good because I don't want her to get dehydrated. I'm so tired I can't really think. I applied for a job yesterday do I hope they don't call me today for any reason (doubt they would though) I'm still undecided about returning to work. Ideally I would like to go back to the school I already work at, but that's getting a little complicated and I am not sure I like the ideas of the other teacher that is coming back from leave... sigh. I have applied at another school. Or I could take a year and start my Masters or just be a stay at home mummy... hmmm money ideally would be nice and the would be DH's choice lol

Lara won't settle ever in the morning and I have to get my other 2 ready for the school run with the baby crying and I hate it. On the weekends I just pull her in with me when she wakes and she goes straight back to sleep in bed with me.

Through the night she feeds and goes straight back to sleep without a problem. I'm half wondering if I should treat that 6.30am ish feed as a night waking and feed her and put her straight down rather than changing her / talking to her etc. Unfortunately our room isn't fully dark in the morning but maybe it'd work. I am sure the fact she isn't settling all morning makes her overtired and hence she doesn't settle properly all day.

What time do your babies have their first proper awake time?

Our record so far is a mere 2 hours sleep between the hours of 6.30am and 10.30pm last Friday. She stayed awake in the Manduca, pram, car...everywhere. She doesn't tend to go to sleep in her pram, even when it is moving...which is a pain as I have to take my 5 year old to and from school each day. She used to always sleep as soon as I put her in the manduca but now she will often stay awake, sometimes happily, sometimes not.

How are your nights going. We are still on 2 to 3 hourly feeds although she sometimes does a longer stretch of 4 hours during the first part of the night. People keep acting shocked that she isn't sleeping for longer stretches.
