Being May, the likelyhood of snow in our backyard is extremely high - so the park/zoo/beach etc is out of the question! I wish I'd had summer babies so we didnt have the location problem. I mean, we could go to the park still, but it would be a last minute on the day change of location! lol.

I think you might just have to suck it up to be honest - family is hard work for us too, but If your little ones have no friends at least the family will fuss over them and spoil them etc - fish and chips is a great idea! maybe you could have it at a park that thomas really likes
With your were girl, I would just dress her up very pretty and cute and give her something you know she will love, so that when she is older at least the photos will show her it was still a big deal

Maybe you could make them cupcakes with sprinkles and a candle for thomas to blow out

We did Fish & Chips at the the park for my twin DDs 3rd birthday. It was awesome, so easy to arrange , pay for, and clean up. I hope the girls want to do it again next year! We had more adults than kids at it

That way you will most likely be chasing the kids on the slide/swing than actually having to interact with the ILs.

Your one year old will be oblivious so there should be no issues about having a combined birthday party there. I would suggest it was focused on the three year old and there was a second cake or something to acknowledge the younger one.

I would say that if Thomas thinks he's having a fully blown party with friends and cake he will be extremely disappointed if it doesn't happen. This time of year you can get away with a picnic afternoon tea in a park somewhere and call it a party. If you invite the kids he plays with and their parents it might be a good chance for you both to make some new friends. And having the in-laws there won't be so bad and you'll be in a big wide open space with other people there as a distractions.

You can do this sort of party cheaply and easily - sandwhiches, chips, crackers, fruit, lollies and drinks don't take a lot of effort and are cheap. The playground is right there for free entertainment.

The other option as other posters have suggested is a special family outing of Thomas's choice. IMHO kids birthdays are for the kid concerned and should be focused on what they want rather than what the parents wants. And half the fun of being a grandparent/aunt/uncle is the celebrations.

I was going to say the same as Mum2ET. what about doing a special family outing somewhere and having a birthday picnic? You could give Thomas a couple of options to pick from, so he feels like a big boy getting to choose where the family is going. That way you could also get around visiting the rest of the extended family and say its just a little family outing.

Nah see I dont have any friends here apart from my online friends. Thats where the problem with lack of friends for Thomas comes in.
I love my in-laws, dont get me wrong - but they're just so incredibly full on - especially my MIL. She's the super paparazzi and makes everyone stop and pose and take millions of pics to get the right shot (which can be a good thing sometimes). I spose it depends what type of relationship you have with your family and in-laws. I couldn't imagine not having my family or DH's family round to help celebrate but we are all very close.

Do you have friends with kids simalar ages? Okay.. so my kids have birthdays 3 days apart right.. I can only afford to do one party so it will be a combined 1st and 3rd birthday..
So I have 3 questions to put to you lovely ladies:

Have you been in this situation and what did you do? Thomas is very much his own person - he knows his birthday will be soon and he's excited about it, so I dont want to take any of his glory away from him. Lily has no idea whats going on, so it doesnt really matter too much.

Also, in regards to inviting his friends - which he doesnt actually have, but says he's inviting them.. what do I do? Will he be old enough on the day to get upset when he realises that no-ones shown up?

Lastly, (sorry for the novel) What about keeping it with just us.. like, no in laws and friends of friends and crap like that? His godmother is coming, I cant stop her - she just booked her flights from Auckland and told me the dates >< I just want no fuss.
