No. 1 my waters broke at 4am (exactly, I was quite surprised!), contractions started at around 10 mins, by the time I woke DH at 5-5.30am they were 5mins and 1.30mins long

No.2 my waters broke 7.30pm the night before (literally while I was putting Micah in his cot, gushing everywhere, I wasnt sure what to do!!! whether I should leave him and run or finish saying good night to him!! I think I ran, then turned around and went back after being half way to the bathroom!!). I had no contractions until after 5pm the next day, despite CTGs and was just about to get induced (Syntocin, had the lure and everything) when contractions decided to start!

1st baby: days and days of labour, then 17 hours at the hospital, 2 hours pushing before episiotomy and forceps delivery. Gas and epidural used.

2nd baby: one day of labour, 4 hours at the hospital, 5 mins pushing before baby came flying out. No pain relief needed, and had minimal stitches.


I was terrified of having another baby, after my horrendous first labour/birth experience. But second babies are 'always' easier (is what my MW told me) and it seems I stuck to that rule. It's amazing how empowering a birth experience can be when you are feeling in control. Wow - was that from first contraction? Jacob took about 12 / 14 hours, depending on whether you count from first actual contraction or from when they got about five mins apart. I must admit, this is one of those 'things they dont tell you about labour'... I thought I was perfectly normal with my pushing times. It's amazing how much it varies between babies and woman too!


My total labour times and weights were...

no.1 - 6hrs 15mins, 6pd 11oz, lying on my back
no.2 - around 5hrs, 7pd, lying on my back


LOL about the pepper hopes!! imagine if that could be true!! A friends relative had six kids or something and reckoned that she never had any labour pains, just felt like she needed to go to the toilet and low and behold there was a baby!!! yeah i dont think size plays much in it, obvious some large babies maybe harder. but for myself

7lb2oz - 30mins pushing - but after 13hrs of posterior labour I was to tired to give a crap about pushing and kept going to sleep.

8lb8oz - 4-5mins pushing - he was in perfect position came so quickly even waters didnt have time to break lol.

6lb14oz - 10mins pushing - I think his smaller size made pushing a bit harder.

9lb9oz - im not actually sure i remember my waters broke which for me has always been very last thing to happen if at all and the next think i was told his head was out. but im certain it was 5-10min.

I think it has more to do about position of both YOU and the baby. Apparently posterior babies are harder to get out and I know with DS1 I was flat on my back, pushing 'uphill' and that can mean it takes longer as well. lol me tooo!!! And I probably shouldnt cos my DS pushing time was 6 minutes Number 2 is in the making at the moment but when that happens I think I'll be camping next to the hospital towards the end of that pregnancy

my 1st was 13hrs labour(he was full posterior) once he turned I pushed for 30mins and he was out.

my 2nd was 50mins active labour and 5mins was pushing.

3rd was 3hr active labour i think 10mins was pushing.he had his head on a slight wrong angle but it rightened at 7cms and he was out 15mins later.

and my 4th was 2.5hrs that was the whole labour the others I had build up. i know i didnt push for long but back up midwife didnt note as much down as my usual mw did. wonder if dh can remember(doubt it)

#2 (9lb 2oz) was a little heavier than #1 (8lb 13oz) but with a slightly smaller head, so she was pretty easy to push out. Funnily enough I found it harder to push #3 out (even though he didn't take very long) and he was lighter with a smaller head circ!

Fiona - #1 active labour was about 12 hours (early labour was about 12 hours on top of that though). Even though I'd read a fair bit about birth and other women's experiences, I don't think anything could have prepared me for what it was actually like.

I was wondering if the size of your baby (first vs 2nd or more) affected the time to push. DS1 - 1 hour

DS2- 9 minutes.

I was actively pushing with DS1, DS2 so not. LOL I think in the end it was about 5 pushes and I say I wasn't actively pushing that much because I distinctly remember DP saying "what's that" in relation to a 'shadow' in the pool and it was DS2's hair and thinking "how the hell did that happen without me noticing???!"

Second labour/birth in general was much better, even though he was bigger, heavier and longer than DS1...though too fast again and shock this time was worse than with DS1. #1 birth was hideous, long (23 1/2hrs)and ended with forceps delivery and lots of sticthes - godness knows how long I pushed for, it was ages.
#2 was perfect drug free natural birth, 9 hrs total labour- pushed for maybe 1 1/2hrs I think- I was 10cm and pushing before I went to hospital, and then was another hr til he was born. second baby-about 6 minutes

Fiona - very different labours. 1st labour was about 36hrs so rather than scared I was just tired and thinking baby was never going to come. 2nd time was much faster and I probably found that more scary. I dilated from 3cm to him being born in an hour so it was really intense. Fiona, 2nd birth was way better. I had a horrible first birth and spent most of my MW sessions debriefing and making plans for if it all turned to sh*t again. It meant we were both on the same wavelength and had all the contingencies up our sleeve. The second one started the same as the first (induction not working) but my MW was involved and kept the communication going. Day 3, she sped it up, including things that I was really reluctant to do, but b/c we'd discussed it all and she knew what my fears and priorities were, she was able to re-explain them to me and talk me through how she was going to manage it to a) get my baby out but b) minimise the risk of ongoing intervention. She succeeded :) For me, the relationship we had was really important b/c I trusted her. The other thing that really helped was the support. I had DH there, and a friend who was my birth support and advocate when need be. Afterward, I found out she had questioned my MW when she was starting the Synto b/c she knew I had been really reluctant. How long did you push for your first babe and then subsequent births?

I'm interested to know as I was pushing for two hours with DS before they ventoused him, moved his head slightly and he popped out. My MW assures me I won't be pushing that long a second time around.
