Thanks everyone for taking the time to respond. I did ask about getting the stitches redone but mw said that if she referred me now they'd want to wait and see what happened naturally anyway.

Good to know it is common and usually heals itself. Not so good about the length of time to be pain free and never being normal though, but that's all part of it isn't it.

Yes! Me! Umm It was a long process...

Basically with mine half healed quickly but the stitches didn't dissolve so I had scar tissue under them and I had this 'prickly' feeling for about 10 weeks. The other half the stitches dissolved before it healed... It healed by about 8 weeks I think. I didn't need any new stitches but the annoying thing was when the MW checked me at 5 weeks she didn't pick up on it and DP asked if everything was 'all good to go' meaning we could have sex and MW said yes but it was the most excruciating pain! So at the 6 week check the doctor had a proper look and was able to work out what happened.

Like someone mentioned, the scar tissue... It took about 5 months for it to feel 'normal' again but yeah, never like it was! I had the same thing happen. Went to the loo a few days after having my daughter and found a long length of the suture hanging down - gave me heart failure. I was advised to snip it off and it would heal by itself which it did eventually. I had the same thing, and yes, it hurt like nothing else!! But it did heal eventually without further intervention. I had a stitch or two removed as they were uncomfortable - it's healed fine. I am sure your midwife would let you know if it looked as though it needed to be stitched more. If you are feeling a bit worried, I think it would be ok to get your GP to give you a second opinion.

Just so you know, it took quite a few months to get back to *normal* - the scar tissue for me stayed quite tender for ages.

(*normal* is written like that cos it's never really the same as pre-episiotomy!)

I had a couple of stitches pop. It took longer to heal but did heal without further intervention. I had my son 10 days ago and needed an episiotomy. My MW checked it today and half has healed well but the stitches have ruptured on the remaining half. My MW said it will slowly heal itself but I'm concerned I'll wait 6 weeks and then have to go and have it redone.
