I was adamant it wasn't wind as he has always been awesome at bringing up wind. And I thought he had started it before we switched to making his final feed a formula feed which made me think it wasn't the change in routine. However the problem has gone away now that we put a bit of infacol in his last bottle. So it must have been wind!! He now very rarely wakes up making our evenings much more pleasant!

My baby does that sometimes, wakes screaming or he screams but he's still asleep. He has severe reflux and a cows milk intolerance. Does he show any other signs of reflux? It might not be that but could be worth investigating. I agree with gripe water too as that can help get those stuck burps up, and maybe a faster flow teat on the bottle as I find with the faster ones the burps are bigger and come up more easily. Sometimes if Im not sure if the wind is all up I put him on his tummy for a bit and the burp comes

I would actually try without the formula for a few nights and see if that makes a difference also try giving him some gripe water ot infacol before bed(I used both).

It definitely sounds like wind to me becuase he is arching his back.

ETA - Another thought, does he spill a lot? or even if he doesnt, it could possibly be a bit of reflux at night time, try elevating the top of his bed and see if that helps.

Edited by Sheza

    Author: BabyH
Subject: 38559
Posted: 26 March 2011 at 8:47pm

Hi I'd love some suggestions please!!!!

Our 13week old baby boy has recently started waking up screaming after we put him down at night. It can be anywhere from 10mins to 40mins after we put him down. It doesn't matter if I put him down half awake or asleep. He always brings wind up quite easily and doesn't seem to wake up screaming during his day sleeps. He arches his back a bit but doesn't bring his legs up. So I'm not sure its wind. If I do pick him up and wind him then I sometimes get a burp but not always - perhaps the act of arching and screaming expels wind before I get there.

Sometimes his eyes are closed as he screams. Often I can settle him by shushing and touching his chest but other times I pick him up. If we let him scream he does get more worked up and starts coughing because he screams so hard. Sometimes he will self settle and then start 30seconds later again. He does scream himself to sleep if we let him too, but we'd really prefer we didn't have to do this every night as it is distressing!!

It does seem to have escalated over the last couple of weeks. He was just waking once screaming and we'd settle him but now its more and more. We don't go in everytime he starts, but maybe he has learnt a bad habit?? Perhaps we need to be more consistent with our tough love so he doesn't get mixed messages.

We have changed to giving him formula for his final feed at night but he was starting to do this before we did that so I don't think its related. He has also semi self weaned himself off the comforter (dummy) and is self-soothing with his thumb. But this is not very good when he is screaming his head off as he is far too worked up to self soothe.

I had thought he might be overtired but he is often quite happy in the evenings and we had already bought his bedtime forward to 7pm and he normally has a 30min snooze between 4-5pm.

Thanks for taking time to read this essay!! :-)
Any suggestions would be wonderful...I guess I can ring plunketline too...

Patrice :-)
